Pings terrible for last 24 hours

Been playing BF2 the last couple of nights and my pings have been awful, hitting 1000  every now and then, falling back to normal (usually 30) and back up, below is winmtr results, taken every half hour for at least 5 mins, during the gameplay etc there were no messengers or mail programs etc running..

Sorry about the messy first one, stuffed up the copying

Now although not as bad as last night, those pings are still unacceptable for a 2mb line lol

Line speed makes no difference to the ping time of your connection.

Pings terrible for last 24 hours

The speed or bandwidth of your connection 512K ,1 or 2 meg is a measure of how much data can come down the link at the same time. not a measure of how fast it is travelling along the link

A ping is a measure of the time taken for a test signal to do a round trip from your machine to the internet destination and back.
So it's measuring in effect the speed at which the signal is travelling.
The further you are away from Plusnet for example then the longer the time lag for the signal to travel that extra distance. Also it depends how many hops there are in the link to where you are sending the ping.
Each of these hops will in turn be affected by the amount of traffic that they are coping with and the performance of the equipement in the hop, so in effect your signal may have to wait its turn for a free slot in time to be sent. Which could add a few miliseconds.
Notice when you do a ping test over muliple hops there is often considerable difference in the ping for each section.

So as you can see its a complex situation that can be affected by distance, traffic, and performance of equipement along the route.

Hope that goes some way to giving you a clearer explanation.

it explains how pings work perfectly, it doesnt however explain why mine have gone so bleedin stupid!!

normally 30 or so, then hitting over 1000?? somethings not right

so if i went by what u are saying i could get 20-30 ping on 56k...line speed does make a difference if the line speed drops really low...so dont go saying crap that aint true

56k is a totally different technology to ADSL its Analogue for one thing and ADSL is digital.
You CANNOT compare the two.

All ping times MUST have increased.....slightly

First, the traffic hits the Ellacoya e30's. Several things happen here,
initially the Ellacoyas use deep packet inspection to see what the traffic
is.

It takes time to inspect the packet, all be it very little time, but were dealing in milliseconds so it will look bad.

With a ping the packet will have to be "inspected" twice adding 2x inspection time to the round trip.

Suppose it depends what the Ellacoyas can handle and if latency increases as as they come under greater load.

and my original question still remains unanswered, even through the ticket system after nearly 12 hours, not usual for PN who normally have gotten back to me after 4!!

Does the windows version of MTR, provide the standard deviation information that *nix version does. This is very useful for determining the cause of ping problems in games (and other things Smiley ). As you can track long term ping terms and see the distribution of pings at different hop points.

For instance seeing a high standard deviation at the first hop is a good indication of exchange contention.

im having exactly the same problem

during the day my ping is fine, but today and yesterday after 10pm the ping just increases dramatically in games, and it gets so bad that i cant even browse the net normally, everything just times out

so, what is going on?

I would suspect exchange contention....or there could be a BT related problem with your exchange.

Check out http://www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/exchangeChecker and pop in your phone number.

Get a copy of http://www.pingplotter.com/

and use the trial period, and just log your pings before 10 and during your ping problems, its best if you can not use your connection during that time.

I generally ping www.jolt.co.uk to check my gaming pings, as they tend to have a resiliant network connection (provided by nildram).

pingplotter is a good tool, for the less tech savvy as it has nice simple gui.

Its suprising how much you can tell from pings Smiley

Its not just me though,

3 other members of same gaming clan were online, all of us had terrible pings, mine hitting 1000, and theirs hitting 600, no its not the server, because others with plusnet who were with us, 1 of which is on same exchange as me, had no problem at all..

This ticket 17494997 is now 24 hours old without an answer, come on plusnet, dont let the side down by proving to others that CS is bad, we know different!

just tried the exchange checker and there arent any problems with it. there was a 'Major Service Outage Event' last week but nothing this week to explain any of the problems im having....
