Passwords and web pages

Plusnet helps out with a 'how to' but I can't get password retricted access to work. Any ideas about what can possibly be going wrong?

Details:

My site is www.irismurdoch.plus.com

I've tried to follow instructions at:
http://www.plus.net/supportpages.html?a=160#web10

The password encoder I've used is:
http://www.earthlink.net/cgi-bin/pwgenerator.pl

The username and password I enter are those
that match .htpasswd

Error page I get:

"Authorization Required
This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apache/1.3.26 Server at www.irismurdoch.plus.com Port 80"

I'm attempting to create password access to a folder 'newsletter'. I have uploaded and altererd .htaccess and .htpasswd as required. (and then done it in triplicate afterwards with new passwords when first try failed)

I'm running a Mac 8.1, ftp Fetch 3.0.3, and browsers netscape 4 and ie 5.

Anybody feel helpful?

RE: Passwords and web pages

Hi,

The normal problem with this is that you uploaded the files in Binary FTP mode. Did you check it was in ASCII mode before you uploaded?

Thanks for:

The options in Fetch 3.0.3 for Mac 8.1 do not list 'ASCII', but I had assumed that 'text' matched this?

The other options are:
wrapped text
macbinary II
raw data
binhex
applesingle

Many thanks for your helping me out on this.

Hi there,

It looks like in the .htaccess file you have the line (trimmed):

AuthUserFile /~/www/im/irismurdoch/htdocs/~/.htpasswd

This is wrong, you should have ir/irismurdoch

Give it a try and get back to us.

With that embarrasing mistake rectified, it still doesn't function.

.htaccess now reads:

AuthUserFile /share/isp/plusnet/www/ir/irismurdoch/htdocs/newsletter/.htpasswd
AuthName "Please Log On"
AuthType Basic
require valid-user

.htpasswd reads:

david:CPGAtNYjELx4
anne:CPGAtNYjELx4

Any more troubleshoot suggestions I'd be greatful, which I am already - thanks for your help.

Good Evening,

I think the best thing to do to take this issue forward is for you to raise the details in a ticket via 'contact us'. I am unsure as to what troubleshooting suggestions you can try, but by raising a ticket we will find someone who can help.

Martin,

You will forgive me for being a little disheartened now - I was sent to the discussion forum by someone when I raised my difficulties on a contact-us ticket earlier - they said: not the sort of problem we can offer support for. Now you say, go back to contact us. Oh dear. Should I give up?
