Newsgroup Speeds??

Hi,

My newsgroup download speed dropped to around 256KBs yesterday (exactly as if my bandwidth had been throttled, in other words my download speed graph was flat at around 256KBs), I'm only on 3.2GB peak downloads so I don't understand!! Tried this morning and my download speed seems throttled to about 128KBs!!!!
What is going on? I've had no e-mails, I am well within my allowed usage figures....any ideasHuh

Thanks,
Mark

Newsgroup Speeds??

Yes there seems to be a problem :!:

I just fired up and grabbed headers for one group from my external provider, which came down @ around 250kbps. I then grabbed headers from PN's text server for one group, and the speed only increased slightly with the multi thread.

Actually while writing this the speed is occasionally spiking @ 900 kbps, but generally around the 250 kbps.

http downloads are running ok.

I'm getting around 6-12kB/sec now (48 - 96 kbps) on external newsgroups Sad

It's not my usenet server as if I access the server from another ISP, I get over 600 kB/sec.

Newsgroup Speeds??

Everything is crap, its not just Newsgroups, downloads, gaming, P2P.

All we can do is browse

I rasied a ticket on the pings issue, says it will get back to me in 2 hours, its been 2 hours already tho Sad

I suspect its Tiscali problems, my Tracert to my IL2/FB game server tracert (ping 450 currently should be 25-30)

Look where the spikes are, PN network looks OK. I had reservations about Tiscali and PN joining forces, Tiscali have an AWFUL reputation for boroadband, but we were assured it would all be fine  , why PN went with them I dont know. Sad

...and I'm back to about 200KBs max again, it's clearly being throttled back...I see that Plusnet are having problems with P2P traffic, is that the same problem I am seeing with Binary NewsgroupsHuh *sigh*

Newsgroup Speeds??

Hi

I just ran a short test and got around 3mbps.

I think it may be contention at your exchange.

*I used to get 5.5mbps even during peak up until the other week btw, so there would seem to be some slow down being caused here on PN network at certain times. (Peak).
But as I say your results appear to have other influences as well.

*Edit* I wonder what kind of speed "suec45" is getting around now?

I'm getting newsgroup download speeds of 25-150k at the minute, down from the usual 700k.

If it's contention at the exchange then I want moving back to BT as i never had any contention problems before I was LLU'd. If it is the content at the exchange, it's looking like BT have more available connections than tiscali.

Newsgroup Speeds??

Hi,

Just download some headers from 2 groups from Easynews, averaging about 250KB/s which for peak time seems pretty reasonable to me.

Usenet traffic does have a lower priority, so the P2P issues may also cause usenet traffic to be a bit slower. I'll speak to the network guys tomorrow.

Getting over 600kB/sec now, so I guess it's sorted.

littlened: You can move back to BT at any time for just £47.

I also have seen very poor download speeds over the last few days. I am not on Tiscali LLU so that problem should not affect me. Normally during peak I can put down round 250-300k/sec, off peak around 600k/sec.

I have just tried to download something from Usenet and i am only getting 10-40k/sec. This is significantly reduced from previous times.

Either the traffic is being throttled back by +net or there is a considerable problem with the network.
