MaxDSL - Any hope for those stuck on 1mb?

When the 512-2mb upgrades were carried out I had to explicitely request (and pay for !) an upgrade as BTs initial estimate said my line wouldn't take it. I finally got a 1mb connection.

My router reports a loop attenuation of 54.5 and SNR of 9.5 - is MaxDSL going to do anything to increase the connection speed?

With an SNR of 9.5 not a chance of any significant change

Hi,

DSLMax will allow your line to sync at the maximum it can support (up to a maximum of 8Mbps), this is determined from your line stats and characteristics. At 9.5dB that SNR isn't very high so I wouldn't expext much of a speed increase, maybe 1.5Mbps at best.

I'm on 1Mbit/s at present, with a SNR of about 27dB and line loss of 53 dB.
Can you give an indication as to what line speeds I can expect with ADSL Max.

Is there any accurate on-line calculator?

Thanks
Mark

Hi,

Mr Saffron from ADSLGuide has set up the following

http://212.23.23.177/calc.htm

it's not going to be 100% accurate but has been pretty good estimating speeds so far.

Note, when entering line speed enter the speed your line syncs at (e.g. 576, 1152 or 2272kbps).

I tried this one before and it came up with 7854kbps!
Am I do something wrong or do you think that is right?
I'm confused that I've tried to have 2Mbit/s in the past and the line won't support it, so it seems a very big jump up.

Thats about right.
Difference is that the new system ignores attenuation and only looks at SNR.
By comparison the OP numbers only give about 1215kb/s

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 8.5 db
Noise Margin 31 db 27 db

With my new Netgear DG834 according to that i should see 8192kB/s apparently!!
My Old Routers SNR was 16db would have meant nothing more than around 4000kB/s shows you what differnce a new piece of equipment makes.

Actually all it proves is how inaccurate / unreliable line stats are on routers because your physical line stats probably haven't change much. Even the figure your DG834 is showing is not acurate and also depends on what firmware you are running. Mine was showing 4dB higher for DS line attenuation and 3dB lower for DS SNR compared to a whoosh test done on the line (which is accurate). Firmware versions below 1.05 can be even futher out.

Bearing in mind my old Router, DSL504 was a few years old and on its last legs, pages didnt load in it properly!!

Ive only just got the router today so havent upgraded the firmware yet.
