Mains cables near phone sockets

I've just seen the following on another thread

Also, make sure to keep mains cables away from the telephone cable.

My phone socket is in the cupboard next to the main electrical consumer units & meters - is this going to cause significant noise etc on the lineHuh

Yes very probably. Your electricity supply is ac and alternates at 50Hz. This could cause noise on the line if phone cables run close to mains cables. I would certainly look into rerouting it to a better location, but remember if it is your master socket you will have to get BT to relocate it.

don't waste your money - i did this at work, my master socket was located right above a 2 way power socket - and right next to loads of network / power / bt equipment. I had the socket moved well away from all of it - and it made NO difference whatsoever to attenuation or snr

It's large inductive loads that could cause a problem. i.e. washing machines, lawn mowers etc. If you lost connection when these types of equipment is used then probably worth considering rerouting.
