Mail getting bounced back

For some reason your mail server has been included on the site http://orbz.org/ which in turn means that i keep getting mail bounced back with the text

"Remote host said: 553 5.3.0 <>... Your mail could not be delivered because your mail server is publicly listed by outputs.orbz.org as an open mail relay and is vulnerable to mail spam. Please notify your IT system administrator to visit http://www.orbz.org/sender.php to address this issue"

Any chance someone could look into this for me.

Cheers
Phil

RE: Mail getting bounced back

Good Evening,

Thanks for replying.

Basically, what has happened is that one of our customers has an open relay (this is a mail server that is set to relay mail from anywhere) which has cause one of our outgoing mailservers to appear on orbz.org.

These are getting more common because of unmetered internet access and DSL.

What happens is that people scan port 25 of whole netblocks looking for open ports, once they find one they will attempt to relay a mail through it. If this succeeds then they will add this to a list.
This whole process is automated using scripts available from hack sites. It is constantly repeated, normally from a hacked machine so that the person doing it is hard to catch and the results posted to newsgroups and spammer forums.

Spammers then use these servers to send their mail, and our mailservers end up on orbz.org and other similar sites.

It is for this reason that we come down fairly hard on customers who run open relays, we block the route to and from a customer on all of our mailservers, therefore preventing mail being sent through us, only lifting it once we are sure the server has been locked down.

We will be in touch with orbz.org to remove ourselves from this list.

Kind Regards

Duncan
