Mail delayed 2 weeks (was Emailing using php on ccgi broken)

Is anyone successfully sending emails using php on the ccgi servers?

I was finding that no emails were being sent by my phpBB install. I've created a very simple test script which appears to work - but no emails are received (several still AWOL from last night).

Edit: Subject changed as it's not just php mail

Hi elvin,

Other people are experiencing the same issues : See http://portal.plus.net/central/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38097

I've been chatting to Ben on IRC who seemed to think that the problem had been fixed. I believe he is now beginning to suspect otherwise.

I raised it here because I thought it needed greater visibility given the usual lack of a service status posting :-(

The problem hasn't been fixed as yet, however it has been raised and will be fixed.

I'm working on a service status post now, we haven't put one up as yet as the email was just being delayed slightly, it now looks like the mail is either being delayed significantly or dropped.

I see the service status says delayed. Is that confirmed (i.e.no mail being lost) or is it just wishful thinking?

That's what the problem was initially raised as, but until there's further investigation we won't know for sure.

But speaking for the scripts that I have running, none of the email has failed to come through at all.

An update on this issue is overdue.

I'm still missing emails sent on Friday. If it is just that emails are delayed and not permanently lost it's one hell of a delay.

Our engineers have now resolved the root cause of this problem however there is a considerable queue of emails on the CGI relay server which will take some time to be delivered

I still haven't seen any emails going back to Friday. Sad Just how big is the queue?

Initially one of the queues was 12,000 or so and the other was bigger than that. Not sure if I can see what they are now, but will try and take a look.

A test message I sent from ccgi this morning arrived within 11 minutes - but I still haven't seen one of the test emails sent Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Has anyone checked if the queues are actually going down?

Given that it's been running for around 20 hours, would it be possible to estimate when it will be back to normal?

The queue's going down, but there's still quite a few mails on cgirelay01. The queue on cgirelay02 has cleared and all new mail is being sent through that one now so new mails should get through quite quickly. No new mail is being sent to cgirelay01 until the queue's cleared.

Is all new mail going through succesfully now?

Yesterday, I uploaded a brand new piece of php that uses mail(). I spent ages fiddling before I noticed the service report.

It currently returns no error but no mail messages come through. This has been the case from first test yesterday at about 5pm until my last test at 11am today.

I've read many posts to the forums on using mail() with the -f parameter etc. Is there anything else I should be aware of when using it, for example are the to/from addresses restricted in anyway, such as one or both can must be anything@myaccountname.plus.com?

My test code is below, based on some I found in the forums. This is the only code I have on the site and I've used the fixphpperms.sh script on it. All ftp'ed as ascii and on the ccgi server.

<?php

ini_set ("upload_tmp_dir", "tmp");
ini_set("register_globals","On");
ini_set("display_errors","On");
error_reporting (E_ERROR | E_WARNING | E_PARSE | !E_NOTICE);

//ini_set("magic_quotes_gpc","Off");
//ini_set("magic_quotes_runtime","Off");

$to = "roffy@roffy.com";
$from = "jaycowper@jaycowper.plus.com";
$froml = "Jay";

$subject = "Test Subject";
$body = "Test Body - fiddling with the form";

$headers = 'MIME-Version: 1.0' . "\r\n";
$headers .= 'Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit' . "\r\n";
$headers .= 'Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"' . "\r\n";
$headers .= "From: $froml <$from>" . "\r\n";

$params = sprintf("-f %s", $from);

if (mail($to, $subject, $body, $headers, $params))
{
echo "Success 4\r\n";
}
else
{
echo "Fail\r\n";
}

?>

It returns "Success 4" as expected, but no mail arrives.
I've tried different combinations of email addresses in the to/from params, with either both or neither being jaycowper@jaycowper,plus,com with identical results.

Any help appreciated.

With one relay server off-line while it clears it's queues, I wonder if the other server is now building a queue. I've just sent a message using a script that I know works - I'll see if it arrives.

Emails should still be coming through, if they're sent now, but it is something that we're keeping an eye on to ensure that things flow smoothly whilst there is only one server in place.
