Latency issues playing WoW

I've recently started to have bad latency issues with my online gaming habit.

Started last week or so and I've pretty much tried everything at my end to fix it.

I've built a new pc recently, re-installed everything, made sure all drivers up to date, opened correct ports and everything.

I did recently ask for my line to be sorted out for "up to 8mb" but have had no notification of that going through.

I asume my connection is being throttled somehow and usually just at the times I want to play (evenings and weekends). I work and have a family so this is the only time I get and it's getting to be consistently 100ms or so during these times, I nipped on at lunchtime and it was fine.

I'm getting sick of this and have raised a question and passed a tracert to support, I don't think it's me, it could be the telia network that blizzard uses but I don't think so.

Time to switch ISP or might they sort this within a few days?

Blizzard are currently upgrading the hosting centres for the whole network. As far as I know the last upgrades are being done today.

The realm I am on, Kor'gall, works perfectly. You should try it to confirm the problem is with your Realm not your Plus.net connection.

Another thing to check is (if you are wireless) if anyone else has set up another access point in your vicinity. If your both on the same wireless channel, that can affect performance. Change the channel to see if the problem goes away.

Also, I never had a decent connection to WoW with my wireless card - direct LAN cable connection to the router resolved the problem. Probably bad drivers from the card manufacturer or a dodgy card in itself.

PS

Are you everywhere on the net FJ?

I'll check both possibilities, thanks for your advice, you're a lot faster than the support centre.

My server is down for 36 hours right now. I'll try Kor'gall later to see if access is improved.

I'll also check the wireless channel and the drivers. I can't really use a direct connect to my router as it's nowhere near the computer.

That's why I got a wireless solution. Having said that the wireless latency is 1ms or less and my connection is very good on the internal network. I reckon it's either Plusnet packet shaping or the lack of datacentre upgrade at the telia end where wow lives. Maybe it'll sort out after the upgrades to the datacentre?

I don't know, all I do know is that I'm not satisfied with how it runs after last week.

Thanks again! Much obliged... Smiley

Latency issues playing WoW

I'm on WoW server Hellscream and feel I have issues because of Plusnet.

I can't really say my pings are awful but with 2meg Bulldog I had 90ms, with 8meg Plusnet I have 120-200ms all the time. The thing that really bugs me is that other players warp on my screen (running into walls etc). In PVP it gives a real disadvantage at times, you think you're standing in front of someone only they warp to another place :x

I've tried another server and still have the same results, however i've yet to try any troubleshooting mentioned earlier in this post.

Can any other plusnet WoW players confirm if they have the warping problem with other WoW users? I'd feel a bit better if other people had the same issues, at least I wouldn't be alone.

Cheers

You need to make sure you are testing another realm that is in another data centre. Geographically the servers are not all in one place. They are spread around Paris, Hamburg and Frankfurt. Testing 2 realms in Frankfurt like your realm is located won't give you any different results. Try Kor'gall (Paris) and Kazzak (Hamburg) for example as this will give you an idea if the problem is your end or to do with the Frankfurt data centre.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I did try another server on another cluster (Al Akir) and the latency still remains with characters warping on screen. I'm not sure where these servers are located but when half the servers are down (like tonight) one of the two is always running.

Al'Akir is in Paris. There are multiple data centre's in Paris though. Paris is another data centre with problems though. Try Kor'gall the realm I'm on. Its in Paris 3 which is the newest.

I would love to have pings in WoW of 100ms, I am happy if its hovering around 200 which it generally is. It used to be fine with 2 pcs < 100ms pings. I was moved to LLU and it was unusable. Moved back to BT and had interleaving turned off, but its still not very good at peak times, tracerts don't really show anything, I am almost convinced this is linked to traffic shaping, if PN would like to turn it off for me for a week I am more than willing to test!

I've got an open question on this and nothing has happened since a standard "We need these deatails" response.

Number is 20503636

I'd like any response, even "We're looking into this, please be patient"

Wish you could view a camera feed of their support centre, I wonder if they're all sat there smoking cigars and drinking port and laughing at the plight of their poor customers?

I was getting latency and packet loss trying to play Dark Age Of Camelot using Plusnet.

I moved to Demon and my problems went away...i'll make my own poll now...

Which do you think was causing my online problems?

a) My PC
b) Plusnet
c) The DAoC Game Servers

Madness!

My work PC blocked it, they must be doing something pornographic! Tongue

I'll check this out when I get home, superb.

Can you see them for the cigar smoke? Or do you just hear the chink chink of the big bags of cash being moved about?

It probably blocked it 'cause you need to install the Axis media control to view the camera's - should be fine at home though!
