Internet disconections.. err???

ok,, so i have the 2meg ADSL line installed, and instead of using a solwise router, which i had HUUUUGE problems with i got my self a Cisco one UhhRaaar .. but now i get random disconections, like the internet times out and reconects. the best way i can discribe this is the fact that ICQ disconects even with a slight upset in trafic, and you get a window sayin "ICQ is disconected" then it recons instantly, same with IRC, MSN, any FTP up/ down load i have going etc etc

I assume you have filters on everything plugged into the phone line?

The cisco should log everythign that is happening.

Can you check exactly what the connection is upto. Does it physicaly drop?

Internet disconections.. err???

This is the same thing that was happening to me i would be online playing or browsing & my A220 PCI modem icon in the taskbar would beep & a little red x
would appear if i was on icq or msn it would disconnect me from them. then about 3 or 4 secs later the modem would reconnect itself. I got fed up with this so i bought a SpeedTouch PCI modem and now im getting disconnected completely & have to dial up again even tho the modem says im online. I'm also on the 2Bit homeworker package and does seem to happen a lot more frequently in the evenings than the day time

Internet disconections.. err???

HI Chaps,

This isn't normally caused by a problem at the ISP side, but it can be a hard one to diagnose. The tips about disconnections in the ADSL Troubleshooting guIde are worth reading, simply to ensure you are using the right terminology if nothing else.

Regards,

Ian

hi with the cisco router there is a way to monitor the connection, however you will have to monitor the connection in memory dont dump it all to screen more than likely the router will fall flat on its face, i forget the command to do this as im not at a route atm but you can use the ? to find thye command .

To keep the logging information in memory, you need to enter logging buffered from config mode.

To view the log use show log from the exec prompt.

I don't know if you have already done this, but the following config commands often prove very helpful when you come to figure out what is happening Smiley

service timestamps debug datetime msec
service timestamps log datetime msec

The only catch being, I don't know on top of my head how much information this will provide pertaining to the DSL. Normally it is just UPDOWN messages and the like. If this is not enough then you may need to apply some debugs for further information - any debug output will be included in the logging buffer if you don;t want to hold your exec session open.

Internet disconections.. err???

WAN SUMMARY

Automatic IP address : Yes

If this means what I think it does - that the router is getting it's IP address as a DHCP client, then I think it should be switched off for a UK BT ADSL connection.

While it is true that you don't enter your IP address manually & it gets dished out to you when you log on, it is not done by DHCP. Don't ask me to explain - I never did understand it, but I know I have to turn "Get by DHCP" off on the WAN side of my router.

1) I may have mis-understood your log, in which case I apologise for sticking my oar in.
2) Even if I am right, it may have nothing at all to do with your current problem.

The IP is assigned within the PPP initilisation packets.
