[ Idea 2311 ] SSL on the cgi webspace

I would like to see SSL on the cgi server. Also I would like to access it via https://www.username.plus.com or https://www.domain-name.com . Also for the cgi server accessable via https://cgi.username.plus.com or http://cgi.domainname.com . This would be very helpful to me.

Thanks,
Craig Brass

To access it via your domain you would need to buy an SSL certificate for that domain name, these are still pretty expensive although you can shop round and PlusNet wont host them cos of the amount of manual work needed to set them up, although my info is a few months old. You still definatly need an individual SSL cert.

[ Idea 2311 ] SSL on the cgi webspace

Hi there,

I have now raised this internally to be looked into. If this is implemented, however, it will not be on https://cgi.username.plus.com or https://domain.com because each domain that uses SSL needs its own certificate - and each one costs money and requires, as Chris says, manual configuration at our end to set up.

I support this idea. I would not mind paying a modest amount extra for the work involved. Some thought needs to be given as to who this should be paid for and who buys the certificate.

If the customer buys the certifucate, then there should be a one off charge for the configuration charge, and a minor charge for when the certificate needs to be renewed.

If PlusNet buy the certifcate, then a flat fee could be added to the regular subscription (but this may need to be for a minimum period to allow PlusNet to recoup the cost of the certificate).

[ Idea 2311 ] SSL on the cgi webspace

Hi there,

It is not possible to provide everyone with a seperate SSL certificate to use with their domain. The reason for this is that each certificate must be assigned to a single IP address - and that IP address can only have one certificate assigned to it. Since the CGI server (and homepages for that matter) has a single IP address with multiple domains it cannot be done.

Also, as an asside, if you want a properly signed certificate then you have to pay for it, if you have a look at Thawte's pricing you can see that this would not be a small upfront fee. There are cheaper places but as an ISP we have to go for the widely recognised certification authorities.

RUNNING PHP SCRIPT THROUGH SSL

How about giving us some method of running PHP script through SSL currently impossible due to SSL only been on https://homepages.plus.net/username/

The CGI server is where the PHP runs.

Hence, why this idea idea has been sugested.

I probably have this wrong but when I looked at the Thawte/Verisign information I had the impression that a server certificate relates to a domain.

If this is the case, and the https program was installed on criticalmass, and we pointed a domain at our CGI space, what else would be needed to allow us to buy and install our own certificate for SSL use with that domain?

To install your own certficiate, you would want your own webserver. I can certainly say personalised SSL certificates will never be possible on a shared public server like Criticalmass. We do have some ideas for hosting products in the future that will give you your own virtual server, to do with as you will!

Sounds good... I'll look forward to hearing more about that!

Thanks for clearing that up. Smiley
