How are your *unencrypted* P2P/Torrent/Usenet Speeds?

Hi all,

This morning saw the completion of the upgrade to our traffic management platform that now allows us to correctly classify encrypted P2P traffic.

This should see an improvement to the slow speeds people have been seeing of late with unencrypted P2P, Binary Usenet, External FTP and P2P apps etc.

Please feel free to provide feedback via this thread so we can get more visibility as to how well this has worked for you guys.

Feel free to comment on how this has affected encrypted traffic too.

Kind Regards,

Bob Pullen

My utorrent speeds are now slower (encryption was previously enabled)

Gone from 600kb/s to 30kb/s

I wish Sky would hurry up and migrate me.

does seem a bit faster however I haven't tested it enough yet.

There is one thing, since the rollout IRC connections have been running very slowly with massive lag

Well Bob
It looks to me as though you've now made it just as bad for everybody.

I tried a 500 seed torrent, which struggled eventually up to 90k, and a 60 seed torrent that wouldn't go more than 20k.
Both of these, on a private tracker, would normally go at 500k for me.

Well done. I'm off to get my MAC key.

Yes, typical of PlusNet. Misery for everyone instead of tackling the root cause of the problem..... insufficient bandwidth.

It would, of course, help if the 'Broadband traffic by usage type' graph was working. For the past few days it mostly hasn't been.

Why is this graph not scaled, so that we can see what bandwidth increases PlusNet are utilising in line with increased customer numbers? This used to be the case but for some reason stopped some time in 2005 (?).

I can confirm this too. And I've done some extra testing. If I connect to an irc server securely it's fine but a regular IRC connection seems to be throttled so i get lag of about 45-60 seconds or timeout completely.

I would appreciate it if plusnet could stop throttling IRC as conversations where i'm lagging behind everyone else by a minute are impossible

Just done a random Usenet download from Easynews.

Peak 4.5Mbps, Avg 3Mbps.

A speed test gives

4Mbps which is typical for me at this time of day. (16:15)

This is a considerable improvement on the unusable 20kbps I have been getting for the past few months during peak time.

My Bittorrent speeds have gone from 'awful' to 'nothing at all'. IRC also has about 120 secs of lag. Nice one, Plusnet.

Can anyone connect to the following:

http://www3.limewire.com:6346

Must be my firewall blocking all limewire traffic?

Will the VMBU tool be updated to show encrypted P2P as a distinct traffic type (ie. separate from un-encrytped P2P)? Currently, I think it gets dumped into the 'Other' category.
