G604t vs Voyager 105 USB modem

Good evening people Smiley

I was hoping someone might be able to shed light on a problem I seem to have since installing a wireless network and retiring my trusty voyager USB modem.

I'm currently on PlusNet Broadband Premier Option 1, upto 8mbps. When connecting with the Voyager modem I would regularly see download speeds on various speed test sites such as www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or thinkbroadband.com as circa 6.1mbps. The modem would always sync at 7.6 mbps.

Since replacing the Voyager with a D-Link G604t (which is apparently sync'd at 608 Kbps Upstream, 8032 Kbps Downstream, the max download speed I see during off peak times at these test websites is 2.6 mbps. The router is using the regular settings, NAT'd and firewalled. Windows firewall is running as it was when connected with the Voyager. Turning off the router hardware firewall makes no odds.

My brother has a plusnet account on the same tarrif. He's also using the same kit and strangely sees speeds no higher than 2.6mbps.

I've tried search of the boards but found nothing that directly relates to my problem.

Any ideas folks?

Hi,

Have you tried the router wired instead of wireless? Just wondering if the wireless connection is reducing the speed, from personal experience my old laptop only ever connected to the wireless connection at 4 or 8Mbps so speeds were always slower than via the wired connection.

Of course of the speeds are the same wired, then I would suspect a problem with the router.

Very strange. I never had this problem and ive been running the G604T for the last 2 years or so.
Out of interest what firmware are you running and have you hacked the router to use any european or russian firmware?

As Dave has suggested try doing some speed tests on a cable.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've already tried emiminating the wifi aspect and instead connected to to the router via ethernet cable. This I forgot to mention. Unfortunately this had no effect, the speeds were exectly the same.

Could someone who is using this router at a high speed let me know the exact setting you are using so I can check if anything I've set is different? I mean are there any settings that would hamper the speed?

My firmware is V1.00B02T02.UK.20050815.

Right now my sync speed is:

544 Kbps Upstream, 8160 Kbps Downstream

Here's the results of a speed test I just did:-

829 kbps downsrteam
423 kbps upstream

A thought just occured. Are you on an office product or are you on LLU. If your on LLU have you selected LLC instead of VC?

I believe I'm on LLU. When selecting LLC instead of VC in the router settings and saving+restarting I find that I can't connect to any websites. I can't ping say www.bbc.co.uk either. Even though I'm apparently synched and connected.

An LLU connection needs to be set to VC based, LLC will certainly cause problems.

I've not used this particular router so don't know if there's any specific you need to set, may be worth checking the manufacturer's website to see if they know of any issues.

James,

I swear down (although I have slept a number of times since) I read that LLU connections use LLC instead of VC.
Once again I swear down this to be the case, but it would seem not. At least its outta my system now.

Easily mistaken!

I think you probably confused the "do not use LLC" with "must use LLC" Smiley

Have you checked the MTU setting on the router? It must be the same or larger than on the PC - setting it to 1500 is a safe bet.

The MTU is 1400 bytes and the MRU is 1492 bytes. These are the default settings I believe.

The Voyager is back in service for the time being. I just did a speed test with the Voyager, 2497 kbps down / 107 kbps up. About 15 mins ago when I ran one last test with the G604t I had 462 kbps down and 68 kbps up.

I wish I knew how to solve this issue as I've wasted cash on this unit and wireless adapter to go with it. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Is there anything else I can check?
