Whilst we believe the vast majority of this data is in fact spam or very old unread mail (By people who were never reading there mailboxes), we do understand that there are a number of customers expecting legitimate email. We don't currently know exactly what volume of this will be returned.

  • Is this a first intimation that the recovery rate will be rather less than the 99% quoted?
  • As someone whose absence on a fortnight's holiday ended with this disaster I object to being lumped into a category of people who don't read their email and there was probably quite a bit in my mailboxes!.
  • Also not everybody who has left email in their mailboxes hasn't read it! Some unfortunates relied on PlusNet to keep their emails safely.

* Is this a first intimation that the recovery rate will be rather less than the 99% quoted?

No.

* As someone whose absence on a fortnight's holiday ended with this disaster I object to being lumped into a category of people who don't read their email and there was probably quite a bit in my mailboxes!.

Hence: We do understand that there are a number of customers expecting legitimate email. The above reference was merely stating a fact.

* Also not everybody who has left email in their mailboxes hasn't read it! Some unfortunates relied on PlusNet to keep their emails safely.

As the majority of people will be using POP3, we are aware of this and deeply regretful of the inconveniences caused.

Please see Email Platform Update – 6pm – 25th July in Service Status Messages where James Bailey says:

Yesterday [our data recovery specialists] informed us that the area on the hard disk which stored the directory structure had been corrupted, and that they were currently trying to recreate the remaining information. However, they were at this time unsure as to how much information could be recovered, nor the likelihood of success.

Our investigation into the type of data that was contained in the emails, indicates that approximately 50% of these emails were identified as spam email, approximately 48% was emailed that had already been read, downloaded and left on our servers with approximately 1-2% of email that was unread. Having said this, we are aware that there is still a significant amount of customer email that is missing.

Today the recovery specialists advised us that the recreation of the directory structure has nearly been completed, and should no other setbacks occur, they should be able to start the recovery and then advise us as to how well this is proceeding.

Is this now an intimation that the recovery rate might be rather less than the 99% quoted and that the 1% - 2% of 'real' unread emails could possibly suffer a much higher rate of attrition?

Just because an email has been flagged as read doesn't mean that the recipient doesnt want to read it again or more fully at a later date!

EVEN READ EMAILS MATTER AND NEED TO BE RETAINED BY AN EMAIL SERVICE PROVIDER UNTIL THE CUSTOMER DISPOSES OF THEM!

I find PlusNet's response to this fiasco quite comical in a sadistic sort of way.

Perhaps it's a new money making scheme.....

They're going to bag all the comments they come out with and then flog it to us to help our roses grow Wink

I wasn't sniping at you either, James, but the information was reading as though not much other than unread mail was deemed important whereas even spam can be if it has been mislabelled!

I am not suffering from the present debacle since I use more reliable external email service providers but I really feel for those who are affected

Hi Sheelsong,

It's fine, I didn't think you were Smiley

I was only saying that the information was factual, not that, oh it's spam, we don't care.
