Don't register or renew your domain through f9

I just posted the ticket below on f9 support, and am posting it here as a warning to others. I await f9's response and will post it when it arrives.
Does anyone else agree with me?

I just recieved an email from you confirming the renewal of my domain http://www.the-iron-dutchess.co.uk, had I known I was going to be ripped off I'd have told you not to bother, and I'd have renewed it through UK2.net. How on earth can you justify charging £52.88 to renew a domain? I just renewed http://www.the-iron-dutchess.com through UK2.net for £3.51. How do you justify charging 15 times the amount for the same service? It's daylight robbery, well it's the last time you'll do it, I used to think f9 was a value for money company, well not any more!

Open : In fact I just checked the domain doesn't expire until 2005-09-29 so cancel the renewal and refund my card with the amount you charged to it and I'll renew the domain through UK2.net at a sensible cost.

This is interesting, My domain is currently set to auto renew, so I assumed it would all be taken care of when the time comes in 2006

If this is the standard renewal charge for everyone I'm going to have to rethink my plans for hosting domains here. I don't remember reading anything about having to pay significant renewal charges when I registerd my domain with f9 last year.

Is it because you are hosting more than one domain with f9? I think I do remember there being some financial penalty if you wanted more than one domain to be hosted.

I think that's the standard charge

I think that's the standard charge.

I have 3 domains, but that is what my account allows.

Hi,

Our standard domain renewal charge is £45+VAT for a uk domain. We aren't a dedicated hosting company and so don't benefit from the economies of scale these companies do.

Most of our subscription accounts offer either the option of a .co.uk domain for £1 extra month or for free. These domains aren't billed for the renewal.

I'm on premier and I'm currently paying an extra 1 pound per month to have only one .co.uk domain which will be due for renewal in December. Could you please clarify that what you have said above means that I will not be charged for my domain to be renewed?

I've also just found a document that states premier accounts can have up to five free domains... how does this work? can I really register up to four more domains and then not have any additional charges for hosting or renewals? or will it be an extra 1 pound per month per domain?

As you're paying the £1 per month the domain will automatically be renewed in December without any additional charge unless you tell us you no longer require the domain.

You can host up to 5 domains without charge on Premier, that doesn't include the registration. You can either register them with ourselves for £45+VAT or register them elsewhere and leave the billing with them and just have us host them.

How do we go about shifting domains to another provider for billing, but keep them hosted with yourself?
I wouldn't mind saving a bit of money.

For a uk domain, you'll need to change the IPS Tag to the new host. You can do this via the domain name control panel on the left via the transfer out link.

You'll then need to raise a ticket requesting that we add the domain back to the account for hosting only.

I just recieved this reply to my support ticket.

The following comment was added to the ticket
Dear Mr Walter,
Unfortunetly the domain has already been renewed, we the charge that amount for renewing because we are not a hosting company yet an ISP.
Reading the consumer protection info, as I understand it you have 7 days to change your mind in any transaction, and as the domain in question doesn't expire until the end of September, f9 could have waited 7 days without a problem. I shall be sending the relevent information along with a letter of complaint to my card issuer, the Visa company, and my trading standards office.

And for f9 to say

is beyond the pale, it doesn't matter, they should be supplying the best price they can get, and if I can get it for £3.51, so can they. So even if they marked it up by 200% it would only come to £10.53. And to charge this amount to loyal customers when they know full well that it is available at 1/15th the cost elsewhere without informing them is just plain taking advantage!

I have to admit this pricing does seem a little out of whack with the industry.... even demon.net who traditionally were well known for neglecting residential customers becuase they were focusing on buisiness customers (which is why I left them and came to f9) now seem to be charging a much more reasonable 30 pounds per year for domain hosting. (they previously chardged something like 200 quid).

irondutchess, which tariff/package are you on? are you on broadband? if so, which one? I'm curious to know why you have to pay, especially now that I've discovered earlier in this thread that I'm actually allowed to host up to 5 domains for only 12 pounds per year with my current service on f9.

I have no phone line to the boat I live on http://www.the-iron-dutchess.com so I put my SIM card into a Nokia D211 radio card and dial up the f9 0845 1422000 number, using my 1500 a month free off peak minutes, so I just have the basic £4.99 dialup package, which was at F9's suggestion. But that should only affect what they charge to host domain names not renew one.

i renew mine through freeola.com

they charge £23 (inc. vat) for 2 years

they also do free hosting as well

but i've currently got f9 hosting my domain, and freeola renewing it.

I've just been looking at geting a second domain on my premier account, and I saw the 45+VAT registration charge, but does this mean I will have to pay 45+VAT every 2 years per extra domain?

Am I right in assuming it's only the first domain I registered here that gets free renewals included in the 1 pound per month? the second, third, forth etc. each have an additional cumulative 45+VAT every 2 years? (that will get very expensive for 5 domains!)

This charge also seems to apply when you transfer a domain in from somewhere else.

I used GoDaddy (https://www.godaddy.com/) for registering my .com domain. Just under a tenner for two years.

Approx £11 for two years on a .co.uk

I use www.1and1.co.uk - .co.uk / .me.uk £1.99 a year with DNS management, so you can transfer to f9.

Bargain!
