Domain names on Free accounts

I have a friend who wants to get a new account, but since they get their phone bill paid for them, they have decided to start with a free dial-up account.

From what I can see on the PlusNet help pages, if they want a domain name and to do everything through PlusNet (for ease), then they have to pay PlusNet the £45+VAT registration fee AND £25+VAT per year hosting fee (it says that free accounts have zero domains hosted free).

Is this correct? Therefore, with the domain registration renewal every 2 years, this is equivalent to paying £47.50 (25 + 45/2) + VAT per year for registering and hosting a domain name with PlusNet on a free account.

I need to make sure that I've got this right, since I'm looking at alteratives (including subscription based accounts with a free domain included) before I recommend to them what's best to do.

Thanks,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Yep, the caluclations you have done look right in relation to a free account...

One thing i have to say here, is that while the intention of hosting on +Net is fine, there are far better and simpler approaches by using a proper hosting company.

From looking at your calculation, you are correct on payments.

However, domains have the full 2 years paid up front. Some providers will accept a yearly payment, but +Net do not. While it may seem odd, it is far simpler for +Net to do this, as it runs in time with the notices from Nominet.

The support FAQ doesn't quite make it clear, however, I am sure the hosting fee (£25+vat) is annual.

I'm open to suggestions for fast, reliable hosting. Requirements include:

a) must also provide dial-up (it will be far easier for them as an Internet novice if dialup & hosting is provided in one place)

b) provide a suitable upgrade path - they will go unmetered or Broadband when they can justify it (and no longer receive free phone calls)

c) must be fast (the website will be graphics heavy) and very reliable

I am happy to recommend PlusNet due to quality of service. I've lived through their glitches for many years, but feel that their overall service is second-to-none.

Not necessarily. You will generally find that web hosting companies specilise in web hosting and ISPs (like PlusNet) specialise in providing internet access. You may find each of those offering the other's service but they won't be specialists and you'd be best to go for an experienced host and an experienced ISP.

As for buying hosting, I have written some articles on hosting at my site:

It just depends on what you're looking for. I'm sort of a self declared hosting expert having worked for various companies and so on, any questions, just ask. Wink
