Please discuss the recent Ideas Forum Announcement here.

Thank you.

The link is wrong, generates a message saying I'm not allowed to administrate, found it anyway though.

To be honest, and I do know that you mean well, I wish the moderators would stop mucking about with the fora which IMHO were perfectly all right as they were. Until recently they've been little altered since 1998 (possibly earlier but I only joined then). A good example is the tutorials, generally contributed by knowledgeable users but now in a place where nothing can be posted. To my mind these are changes for changes sake, not a help.

What "Ideas forum announcement" are you referring to? Never heard of it.

EDIT: If it has anything to do with the "Spring Forum Update - Information Post" here then there is nothing in that which mentions an "Ideas forum"

The link you added is wrong as I get the following response

"You are not authorised to administer this board"

I guess you were logged in as admin when you copied the url.

"Ideas forum" - is that any different to the "Ideas and suggestions" forum then. I think that forum was a waste of time as a lot of good ideas and suggestions were made but never implemented by f9/plusnet.

Hmm: Went on a rant and have edited.

I can see your point here, but the recent changers are designed to make it easier for any customer, new and old to find the correct advice and in the most efficient way possible.

Hopefully the way we are making these changes are for the better, but if not, tell us.

Thanks Jeremy.

Id also like to echo what Jeremy said there. We are looking at altering these forums so a newbie could look at them and easily navigate as well as feel confident they can post in the selected forum.

We really do need your input and thoughts on this but we are looking at and facing a situation where we have this large index of forums and possible newcomers may be scared off a little by the fact that there is a choice out of so much.

Anyway as I said above we welcome your input.

Hi hsnetwork,

In response to your comments about the forums and choice for new users. I think the old sales addage comes to mind. If you present a customer with 10 items to choose from such as say digital cameras in his her price range and you stand back and watch it takes say 60mins for the person to make their final choice. But if you only present the same customer with 4 or 5 cameras to choose from they will probably choice one in say 10mins hence sale done!!.

I think there are only a limited number of things you as MODS can do with these forums to achieve your aims. 1) simplify the forums but cutting down the number of forums in the index 2) move other non essential forums or information to another location? like tutorials perhaps. 3) merge and again reduce the number of actual forums to choose from so some topics would be conglomerated into one larger wider forum. 4) have different forums with different purposes located in different places within the portal according to value or interest or experience level (possibly?).

Anyway these are just my reactions & ideas to your posting above.

Hi Ivan,

Indeed there is only so much we can do especially as mods.
What is being taken into account is the level of activity within these forums, the level of usage a forum gets, the need for having material duplicated and so on.

I cant see any need for having tutorials being on this forum and over on usertools. Same with the ideas forum, the PUG already conduct a high level of suggesting and thinking and then pass these onto F9. Whilst the thinking may be different to that of the Userbase I once again think it would be best to have this in one place.

This in the end will leave the forums to be a lot cleaner a smaller index and easier to manage. Like you mentioned if a person had a choice out of 6 cams as apposed 4 it would take them longer to think and decide. It could also have an unwanted affect of putting the person off as they feel ackward for taking so long and they go.
If we narrow down the forums and leave them cleaner a person has no need to feel ackward as it should be straight forward as to where a comment, general chat or support question should reside.

Mind you, there are some historic reasons why things have evolved like this.

Many (most?) of the tutorials were originally posted by users, not F9 - they can't do this directly any more. Also if you have a quick shuftie you will see that already there is the odd question (about php) popping up on this forum because the more obvious php/cgi forumno longer exists. Perhaps you should just collapse everything into a single forum - no difficulty at all in deciding then eh?

Am I mistaken or is the use of these forums declining anyway? Perhaps many of the more active users are moving on.

The PAYG forum will be a complete waste of time I think.

Just a update for people on the board.

The Ideas and Suggestions forum will be closing at the end of this week, if you do not want this to happen, please post here.

If nobody from F9 can give any sort of commitment to actually reading message posted in there, then I can't see the point of it.

If someone from F9 can commit to reading it, posting replies to say the suggestions are being looked at and then posting any feedback as to the either the progress of that suggestion or a reason why the suggestion has been discarded - then I say keep it.

Personally I think the forum is needed. But what's needed more is a commitment to act on the points raised there by the F9 staff.

Hi Again,

Seems to me that the ideas & suggestion's forum shows a democratic principal in that F9 users can add or make comments about the service they are paying for. So closing the ideas & suggestions forum shows clearly that F9 have STOPPED listening or have no intention of listening to their own customers concerns about the service. Actually F9 are the loosers here as they are not prepared to accept legitimate customer feedback and that such feedback can be used to improve the service, atleast in theory if not in practise.

**Closure of these forums just proves how small minded F9 have become, & how F9 management will always make its own mind up in an autocratic top down way without giving any consideration to real customers when it comes to it IMO? A sad day frankly!! but as I am a cynic anyway I'm not suprised.

I personally like this idea.... For simplicity I generally only read this forum "F9 Community Support" because it gets the most postings.... I never bother reading any of the others because there is generally not enough traffic to make it worth the bother.

You really only need many fora(ums?) on high traffic volume sites to help people find what they are looking for and prevent topics scrolling off the bottom of the page too quickly.... but a very little used site like this one would benefit from having all topics mixed in one forum.... possibly two, one for socialising and generic internet things and one for f9/PN ISP related issues.

Hi

This was the one of the main reasons for the recent changes, I personally think all the changes have made the forum fell and work better, but we need to know if its not working.

We are going to change some of the titles and descriptions very soon, to better reflect the changes and hopefully make it easier to find things in the new places.

If you have any ideas, please write them below!

Cheers J. Smiley
