Difference between PAYG and Premier

There has been a number of posts by CSC recently stating that PAYG gives better performance than Premier. In particular it has been stated a few times that all PAYG traffic is Gold.

However, the produc descriptions at http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/network/traffic_management.shtml state that the same classification of traffic types to gold, silver etc. is used for both Premier and PAYG. i.e. that until you start hitting the Premier threholds you should be getting the same performance as on PAYG!

Which are correct - what CSC are saying on the forums or the advertised product descriptions?

Broadband PAYG is designed for customers who want to enjoy high-speeds at all times of the day. As such, our PAYG service is prioritised on our network at all times, for all types of traffic.

I've been using Wireshark to monitor my traffic and everything I've seen has been Gold.

However, further down the same page when you select PAYG in the dropdown list you get:

How do we manage traffic on our network?
Different types of traffic have a different priority at peak times on our network, with time-sensitive applications such as gaming and VoIP having the highest priority

with the table listing the different types!

If that statement and classification table is not appropriate for PAYG why does it still display?

Given it does display, PN could change the why PAYG is prioritised and claim it is still within the product description!

How can you tell that looking at the output from wireshark? CS asked me to send them a capture for an FTP transfer. No way of telling what is prioritized as what reading the output.

Hi,

Most traffic on PAYG is in the gold queue, the exceptions are things like gaming and VoIP which get a higher priority in Titanium.

The table on that page isn't specific to PAYG (that and the "Why do we have to manage traffic on our network?" question appear on all account types) and is there as an overview of the network. As I say, all traffic on PAYG will fit into either Gold or Titanium, while for Premier the traffic will fit into Titanium, Gold and Silver (with Bronze only for peak time level 1/2 management on P2P/Usenet/FTP).

So to be crystal clear, there is never any PAYG traffic classed as Silver?

You've missed out the word "supposed". I suspect that this is not the case. Cry

If the only exceptions are that some PAYG traffic is Titanium means that all other traffic must be Gold.

Just seeking confirmation.

You mean my speed tests?

It shows PN is the limitation in speeds on my connection. Sombody might call this lack of capacity, the customers, some might call it being profitable, the suppliers.

Nope, no PAYG traffic in silver and none in bronze. It's all either gold or titanium, in the future some may go in platinum when it starts being used.
