Custom 404 Error pages

I read an article today that explained how on an apache webserver you should be able to create a .htaccess file to define your own custom error404 webpage. I did this but then got error500 message trying to access my website. I have removed the .htaccess file and all is well again.

So my question is, what do I have to do in order to define my own 404 page?

Cheers

RE: Custom 404 Error pages

Error 500 means a problem with your coding of the htaccess file (confusing since it calls it an interal server error).

On my domain, I have
ErrorDocument 404 http://fa55.net/error404.htm
If you type in http://fa55.net/thispagedoesntexist.htm it will work.

Make sure you rename it to .htaccess after you upload it to the server and also try changing from binary to ascii in your FTP client.

RE: Custom 404 Error pages

Niceone, I got that working now, the article I read had relative paths, not absolute, and that did the trick thanks. On a similar not, can I do the same with 401 & 403 errors at all?

RE: Custom 404 Error pages

How've you got your domain working without the www prefix. You appear to be hosted by plusnet yet you've got www.fa55.net and fa55.net to both work?

I thought they couldn't do that
