Constant Disconnection from PlusNet

For the last week I have experienced constant drop outs from PlusNet... The connection just stops but all the lights on my router are still on. Then suddenly the connection comes back. Happens on an almost hourly basis... can anyone have a look at this or do I have to start a ticket?

I dont really feel comfortable leaving my firewall off for investigation im certain its not a router problem. I tried the fault checker and BT connection is fine.

Update:
It seems to happen particularly when using P2P. I shoud not be managed at all because of my account type, can someone please ensure I am not being managed or limited.

This sounds like your router cannot cope with the number of P2P sessions you are connecting through it. Many older routers with older firmware have had problems with dealing with 100s of sessions causing instabilities, lockups and reboots.

What ADSL equipment are you using and have you tried the latest firmware versions as many have updates to fix problems with high numbers of sessions that P2P apps use. Also try limiting the number of sessions your P2P app uses to so 10 or 20 to see if you still have a problem.

Its a Solwise SAR110 still on the original firmware.

What I dont understand is that ive never had this problem before, why should I now? Heres a traceroute I just did:

WITH P2P OFF:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.7.1
2 21 ms 20 ms 19 ms lo0-plusnet.pte-ag1.plus.net [195.166.128.64]
3 20 ms 20 ms 20 ms ge0-0-0-403.pte-gw2.plus.net [84.92.4.2]
4 21 ms 21 ms 19 ms ptn-cdns01.plus.net [212.159.6.9]

Trace complete.

JUST OPENED A P2P program:

Tracing route to ptn-cdns01.plus.net [212.159.6.9]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.7.1
2 75 ms * 74 ms lo0-plusnet.pte-ag1.plus.net [195.166.128.64]
3 97 ms 22 ms * ge0-0-0-403.pte-gw2.plus.net [84.92.4.2]
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 * * * Request timed out.
6 20 ms 20 ms 20 ms ptn-cdns01.plus.net [212.159.6.9]

Trace complete.

What you are seeing can also be caused by a lack of or bad management of sessions within the router as each separate tracert (which is actually a ping) is a separate sessions and if the router cannot cope due to the P2P using up all the sessions, you will get timeouts.

Try reducing the limit on the the number of sessions your P2P app uses and continue with the tracerts and you will then discover the maximum sessions your router can cope with. Keep it below 400 and you should be OK for the solwise.

Anything above 100 sessions makes it die. Im assuming new firmware would probably cure this?

Currently im on: VIK-1.38.030131a13

However, upgrading may not solve the problem with your router.

Would changing router perhaps be a better option? Seems the SAR is limited in terms of sessions but other routers are now P2P friendly or something. Any recommendations?

Thanks

The router is showing it's age now and is no longer sold.

I have run >800 P2P sessions on a netgear DG834 (using the latest V3 firmware) so would recommend it for your use. It's also been very reliable for the past year and is very simple to setup and configure.
