Connection speed

Recently re-connected and was told I would have a faster connection than 512kbps. When i do a speed test on F9 it always says 12mbps - 20mbps however when checked by an independent company it comes back as 400-470 kbps. However when i do a test from the same location via a friends F9 account it says 461kbps.

Can you please explain the reasoning for why the speed test will tells incorrect speeds and also when i will get a good speedHuh?

Connection speed

When you say recent, how recent?

Also do you know what speed your router or modem are syncing with the exchange at?

And finally are you sure "12mbps - 20mbps" is what you meant to say?

Recent as in reconnrected Monday 23rd. I was told my connection would be increased in speed.

I did mean 12-20Mbps as recorded in my F9 speedtest account. Not sure what you mean by syncing with the exchange atHuh

Firstly I would double check you read the 12-20 correctly or you didn't make a mistake with the units as the highest connection speed is 8Mbps and this isn't achievable in practice.

If you connecting through a router there should be a status screen on the web interface, the F9 help section or the manufacturers instructions/website should tell you how to get to it. There it will tell you what speed your actually connecting at and will highlight weather the speed issue is related to a poor quality line / excessive distance from exchange or another problem.

If you are using a modem you will have to wait for another response as I have never used one before.

One other point the other speed test results you got "400-470 kbps" are you sure it was kbps and not kBps, upper case B rather than lower case b.

I am sure about the speeds tested. Look at my account at the previous test speeds and you will see yourself?? This has not answered my questionHuh?

You didn't answer mine; do you have a modem or modem router?

If router see my previous post.

I have just cut and paste the following data from the speedtest history on my account.

Date Speed Achieved (kbps)
29-07-2007 23:13:12 15245.7
27-07-2007 23:17:11 18313
27-07-2007 23:10:08 13481.1

26-07-2007 14:27:42 2664.6
26-07-2007 14:26:06 2911.6
25-07-2007 21:18:30 19170

23-07-2007 21:23:24 3864.8
23-07-2007 18:33:58 22734.5

Yet when tested by another system it is completely different. My friend came round and logged into his F9 account and we done 21 test after another and the results were miles apartHuhHuh

There aren't any indications of slow download speeds in that list. The slowest on 26th July is 2664.6kbps which is normal for an "up to 8Mbps" (that's up to 8000kbps) service at moderate distances from the exchange. This is substantially more than 512kbps so you have what was offered.

Your last five results are over 11000kbps which is not achievable on an "up to 8Mbps" service. If these results are from the speedtester on the portal then they are suspect. It is known that some users get suspect results and PlusNet have a new tester in beta trials available here.

If you want further comment from the community please post the complete "Forum link" text from the mybroadbandspeed test together with your router stats (Connection Speeds, Line Attenuations and Noise Margins - Downstream and Upstream) available by logging into your router web interface, selecting the Modem Router Status page and clicking the Show Statistics button.

I know it does not indicate any slow speeds!!! Thats my point!!!!!!! I was told when i re-connect they would put me on upto 8mb, however, when i tested it would say something quite fast as below, however, when i checked via another site it would come back as 410-480kbpsHuh So my point is why all of a sudden when they said i would be getting a faster connection does my speed test come back with over exaggerated speedsHuhHuh? I know to check my router/modem status. Thats why i am so annoyed by f9's speedtest and the fact that it is too much of a coincidence that when i am due to get a faster connection, the speedtest starts giving inaccurate speeds? I am paying for upto 8mb line but getting 512mbs max which somehow doesn't seem right. Also my first question was why f9's speedtest is giving incorrect results? which has not been answeredHuhHuh So really i dont have what was offered.

So whats your exchange sync speed?

Did you give the new beta speed tester a go?

sorry didn't read uor reply properly. I have checked the speed via the link u provided which has come back correct which leaves me with my last question as to why i get such a slow speed when i pay for upto 8mb. 512 does not justify paying for a 8mb line!!!!!!! I know of a f9 user local to me who gets at least 2mb. I am not happy paying the same price as my friend who gets 4x faster connectionHuh?? Especially when I was told I WOULD get a faster connection.

Last time I try and then I give up.
Can you check your exchange - router sync speed?
This will tell us if the problem is with your line or F9.

So it looks like a problem on F9's side, can you check the speed F9 have logged for you, go to: -
Connection Settings (on the left) > High Speed Broadband

There should be a connection speed reported on that page.
