Connection problems during evening.

Don't know if anyone can shed any light on this, but it's doing my head in.

I've had a Plusnet account since 2004, never had any problems. I realised that at £29.99 I was overpaying for a 1mb connection, so I downgraded to a 2mb Premier account in January. I started to have problems with my connection with frequent dropouts and slow speeds. At about the same time I changed router to a Netgear Wireless DG834G.

Basically what happens every day is that between roughly 7am and 5.45 pm everything is fine. From 5.45pm until 7am the next day I have either no connection or one that is so slow it is unusable. Plusnet have asked me to run the BT Speedtest, which during the day runs at 914 to 932 kbps, but after 5.45 I can't even connect to the Speedtest site using the BT login.

My router logs for last night look like;

Sun, 2006-02-19 17:00:01 - Send E-mail Success!

Connection problems during evening.

as you are getting a loss of sync it is definitely a problem at your exchange, check this site to see if you have contention issues and you will be best raising a ticket, unfortunately its nothing to do with PN and all to do with BTw so it may take a few days before things start happening

My exchange is Wrexham North, which looks OK. I've already raised a ticket but I don't think PN will raise it with BT until I run a speedtest between 12am and 7am which I'm unable to do.

Thanks.

ITs worth checking your wireing. filters etc are all still good.

Theres troubleshooting guides on usertools.

Loss of sync is either a line fault or soemthing up with ur hardware. IF you request plusnet to raise a fault they should run you through everything u shud check before they raise the issue to BT. (BT charge you if the problem is at your end)

Connection problems during evening.

if it is so bad that you can't connect then they should be able to, if you connect to http://192.168.0.1 and press show statistics and copy the line stats to the forum should be able to advise you more

Line stats look like:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 17 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 17 db 29 db
N/A

Connection problems during evening.

Statistics show like this.

System Up Time 81:33:24
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 9977 12136 0 164 1164 02:38:13
LAN 10M/100M 501041 359189 0 1712 189 81:33:19
WLAN 11M/54M 56581 33650 0 138 19 81:33:09

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1152 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 55 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db 23 db

The thing that baffles me is why everything is fine between 7am and 5.45pm and not aftwerwards ? If it's hardware or filters, would the problem not be more intermittent ?

Thanks

Connection problems during evening.

you are very close the 1meg cut off limit which doesnt help things, the reason I think its exchange contention is because you only get cut off in the evening, the busiest time of the day.

I wondered about that too, but It's no better at 5am either. Would going from an 8mb Premier to a 2mb Premier account have made any difference to any of this or should I write that off as co-incidence.

Thanks

The only advantage you're currently getting from an 'upto 8Mb' account is extra bandwidth allowances. Limits which I can't see you ever getting near (although you may if you're running P2P 24/7) as you're line is synced at 1Mb. I'd definitely reduce you're account to a lower Premier account purely to save money as you're not getting the speed/bandwidth advantages at the moment by the looks of things.
As for the disconnects, I'd follow what others have suggested about checking cables, hardware, etc and everything else covered before raising a fault about them.

Is there anything that switches on (Street Lights etc) around the time you lose sync and off again at 7.00am?

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear, I've already downgraded, that's when my problems started. I will have another look at hardware, cables etc but it still seems odd that for 10 hours a day everything is fine (and had been for the previous couple of years as well.)

That's an interesting thought. I will see if anything else happens when the connection drops this evening.

Connection problems during evening.

Could also be worth checking your router stats when you're experiencing the problems-- if the SNR (Noise Margin) figures go doolally at the same time it could be an indicator of external influences like streetlights etc

Connection problems during evening.

Just to provide a brief postcript to this. To glloyd who suggested the streetlights as a problem, you're a genius. That's what was causing it and the loss of sync coincided exactly with that. Eventually persuaded PN to let BT have a look and a very helpful engineer turned up yesterday and replaced my master socket with one with a microfilter built in. After which everything seemed to run faster. Still lost connection when the lights came on, but something happened last night and it's been fine since (PN's own problems this morning notwithstanding).

So for the first time in about two months we have a working connection in the evening.

Thanks to all who helped.

What a good result. And an inspired guess from George.
Now that's just what these forums are supposed to do! Smiley
