Being redirected to http://194.74.65.98

Sincere apology if this has been posted elsewhere -

I am being intermittently redirected to http://194.74.65.98/ (using Firefox)

I have to close the browser session to be able to get the page I've requested (sometimes it happens again straight away, sometimes not)

I was updgraded to BT IPStream Max on July 6th - is this relevant ?

Hope someone can help.

Hi

I may not be able to help much however have you

1. checked what your home page is set to

2. checked for Spy/Ad/Malware and viruses?

3. If wireless is your connection secure?

its could be you have something like spyware and/or a malicous programme that is trying to connect to a certain site

cheers for reply - yes this is the page I am redirected to - ... from googling it seems to be a default page at the BTW exchange.

there must be something set up at the exchange that if it cant fulfill an http request , it redirects to http://194.74.65.98 rather than sending back a 404 / Not Found ...

hmm

it seems plusnet arnt able to authenticate you correctly so BTW are assinging you their IP and dns.

This happened before when plusnet had problems with overloading on the radious boxes i think.

An update from myself on this - (the OP of the thread)

Thanks for responses on this -

problem only seems to happen with Firefox (latest release)

It doesnt seem to happen when I request the page from IE ...

odd.

You said in your first post that the problem happened intermittently. Did you notice whether or not this was only with specific webpages? If so, you could always use the IETab addon for Firefox which will allow you to set certain pages to only open in IE (which will still be in the Firefox Tab)

I've noticed Firefox seems to cache the IP and I assume it does its own lookup and when your connection is working OK, it is still looking at the wrong IP.

I have some domains on multiple servers, and can (and do) switch the IP for the www.domain entry, but have to close Firefox to view the new IP. For that reason I've started to also use DamnSmallLinux in a window, so I can have Firefox and Lynx running separate from Windows (and I keep Netscape 7.1 too, as an alternative).

(In the past I've used separate PCs and VNC to control them).

If it is only doing it in firefox, try clearing your DNS cache.

many thanks for this and other suggestions -

the sites it happens on are very random - for e.g. when I use my stumble upon firefox plugin it will randomly happen....

I tried the dns - cmd --> ipconfig /flushdns

it seemed to work, but then lo and behold I got it again... I've not spent a huge amount of time on this (I work in IT so when I go home at night I dont particularly want to investigate another defect) maybe I'll have to look into it some more... its very annoying...

While the sites you are visiting are random, it may not mean the problem is random. If you keep trying the same site will it always fail or occassionally connect?

Me too

I'm getting this exact same error. Happens wit hboth Firefox and IE. Tried flushing the various caches but still exactly the same. I was wondering if it had something to do with Plusnet moving over to LLU and away from BT Wholesale. Yes, I know that if this was the case then it wouldn't show an error from BT but I'm grasping at straws now.

Cheers

If I get the redirect It will always fail (hitting refresh etc) till I close the browser (not tab) window. When you start again it is random whether it can contact the site again.

So to clarify - when error occurs it will never connect in the same Browser session.

I've taken simonargent advice -

installed IE Tab 1.0.9.5 on Firefox - if a page redirects, I do a right click / open in IE tab. So far 100% success. An annoying work around, but works none the less...
