Anyone else being throttled like this? (silly question #436)

These are my last few speed tests on the +net tester:

23-05-2006 09:21:04 1890.1
22-05-2006 19:07:55 910.5
22-05-2006 19:02:05 951.2
22-05-2006 18:47:43 896.2
22-05-2006 15:37:58 1890.1

Surely this is bang out of order. I really don't mind a little bit of throttling/shaping to keep things running smoothly, but this....

No wonder I've not had a reply to my ticket asking about a problem with my speed?

Dave...happy with the service...so far..

Anyone else being throttled like this? (silly question #436)

I can run speed tests at 3.5Mb in the morning or early afternoon, but any time after about five pm and it's down to below 1.

This is either because Pn do not have enough capacity for all the people they have signed up, or because the telephone network is clogged with everybody trying to use their new high speed 8Mb lines, or a combination of both.

Are any other ISPs better at giving high speeds in the evening?

i'll trot it out then.

What do you get on the BT tester?

You could be suffering from shaping or contention or both, it's the only way to find out.

1846 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Premier option 2...on a 2Mb speeded line....

Hi,

If you can try the BT speedtest when the PlusNet speedtester is showing the slower speeds then that should confirm if it's exchange side contention kicking in.

Have you checked

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges

to see if there are any known problems at your exchange? If it is contention then the speeds you are seeing are within BT's guidelines of what they consider normal speeds.

I did a bt speedtest yesterday when the plus speed was at it's lowest and it came back with 1650.

This has been showing red since early April, but it's only now that I'm seeing a problem - no problems since I changed to maxdsl in March. BT say end of April for the fix, but hey, its now May (almost June)

Anyone else being throttled like this? (silly question #436)

Ignore the variable speeds on the Plusnet speed test - there's a very simple explanation for this:

The Plusnet speed tester is crap

I've tried running a series of speed tests alternating between the ADSLGuide speed tester and the Plusnet speed tester. The results from the Plusnet tests varied between just over 3,000 and 6,000, whilst the ADSLGuide tests were all between 5400 and 5800.

The ADSLGuide tester is in London (where you connect to the Plusnet network) and the PN tester is in Sheffield. I suspect that all the PN tester is showing is problems with the PN London/Sheffield link.

The Plusnet UserTools exchange checker doesn't get updated very often.

"Record last updated: 10 Apr 06" for the exchanges I checked.

This one seems to have more current information:

Better, but still well below your sync. What's your setup - router, USB or PCI modem? If router are you using wireless?

I'm on a 8mb Business line, with 20:1 contention to the exchange and 800kps upload speeds. Please don't laugh too hard. Theres not been a full week where I've been happy with the product.

No seriously,
are you on ADSLMax? - " 800kps upload " implies you are.

what are your modem stats? SNR Margin, synch rates, attenuation...?
If you are not sure how to find these figures, then indicate
what equipment connects your computer to the internet, and someone hopefully will be able to help you extract the numbers fro that equipment.

Its not funny, but...

....wasn't it Peter Cooke who said something like:
"if there is someone worse off than me, I'd like to meet him"?

Well Hello Mr "worse off than me"!

Connection Speed: 7392 Down Stream 832 Upstream
Line Attenuation: 35db Down 10 db Up
Noise Margin: 2db Down 12db Up

I honestly think we've got a line problem but it got very bad today. Until I know what the real issue is I can't really point fingers but, as I said earlier I've never been fully happy with this connection.
