ADSL Home Self-Install Installation Costs:

I just wanted to compare what my total cost for self-install adsl is compared to anyone else who may have got a better deal.

£70.50 - adsl line activation
£22.99 - monthly subscription

From www.dabs.com:
£26.44 - (total cost) 3 x Dynalink Adsl Filters
£51.69 - DabsValue Conexant PCI Adsl modem

Grant Total = £171.62 inc.VAT & Delivery.

I've gone for the cheapest ADSL modem available which i've heard should do nicely compared to a more expensive one that is double the price!

The question is, is an internal modem better than an external modem regarding ADSL - i'm concerned with USB bandwidth as PCI should have no problems like my current 56k modem?

RE: ADSL Home Self-Install Installation Costs:

I've just read a new review of this modem by a consumer via dabs.com. The person said that it was supplied with a cable which has a UK style plug on one end and not the RJ11 American style plug which means it won't fit into a filter unless the cable is changed but i'll have to see when it arrives.

Anyhow, where can i get a cheap RJ11-RJ11 cable from if needed?

I got a 10 metre RJ11-RJ11 cable from Videk, but they do all lengths...

If you order before 3pm, it should drop through your letterbox the next day.

Hope this helps

I would say that a PCI modem would have some advantages over a USB one, depending on the amount of USB devices you may need to ensure you do not use too much bandwidth or ampage. I use the USB Alcatel fish myself and generally have few USB problems, although they do rarely occur. You could consider a pwered hub if you did go for the USB option.

Thanks

RE: ADSL Home Self-Install Installation Costs:

In my opinion, an internal PCI modem has less to go wrong in terms of using the PCI bus versus the USB bus.

I already have 6 USB devices 'hogging' the bus and I do get the occasional problem which is probably driver related, I would prefer to use the safer and more reliable PCI bus.
