60kbps download on a 2MB connection

What server are you downloading from?

Have you tried downloading it from ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/?

What does a traceroute to the server look like?

Hi Daniel,

Have you rebooted your router/modem since the speed upgrade was set on our side?
N/A

60kbps download on a 2MB connection

if this was happening yesterday i agree with him i was only managing to download at 70 or so kb/s off of three different sites.... Did a speed check everything seems fine.

pinged a few servers which ranged from 48 to 601 lol

and played a few games (Of course only to test my connection) this was all plus 110 to 200

60kbps download on a 2MB connection

Hi guys, I'd like to ask about this question about download speeds myself, am not on BB as yet, activation in progress, but, hopefully will be on the wonderful world of broadband in the next week or so, BT currently activating line according to order tracker, the question I have is this,

does the bandwidth contention affect downloads from web sites? every so often I need to do virus scanner downloads, and upgrade my JAWS screen reader which is a huge 40 meg file, seems to get larger with every new release! I understand that file sharing is affected, but I don't use that, and being blind I also don't game either.

question 2,
how fast should I be able to get stuff? at the mo, using NTL freedom 2 hours a time dial up, speeds of 5kbps are common, and, to be honest, it annoys me!

if anyone has an idea, on those 2 questions please post here,

question 3,

are speed touch ADSL modems and voyager 105 modems one in the same? or is the voyager different? a friend of mine, who is hopefully going to join me on plusnet, has a speed touch modem, through wanadoo, and every now and again it seems to make her USB sub system die! the modem stays active but any other USB devices won't work at all. her pc is based on one of the asrock motherboards, she runs an athlon XP2800+, cannot remember motherboard model sorry, she is thinking of getting a router, because both her and her sister share the current connection by way of cross over ethernet wire which I set up for them.

question 4, for you skillful guys on tech support,

what router do you recommend to my friend to use? she's blind also, so needs on that can be accessed through the web to configure it's settings?
some people say draytech are good, any ideas?

many thanks,
Brian.

60kbps download on a 2MB connection

Hi kwhawell and welcome

On download speeds, don't worry. They do vary from site to site, but for a straight small download such as 40Mb( 40mb is a small file when you've got broadband) it's not unusual to get 200kB plus on a 2Mb line, so no more than a few minutes.
And if you start file sharing on Peer to Peer, other variables are introduced, but I normally get 200kB on that as well.

As to which router, there are as many opinions as people on the forums. Tongue

this thread is one of many offering advice.

I suggest you do a search of the forums using the word "router" to get a summary of the opinions.

60kbps download on a 2MB connection

thanks for that info, am now really looking forward to getting my bb plus package up and running, best part is, I'll be able to download me a copy of fedora core 3 linux pretty fast. will BB plus give me the same throughput as the premier pack? it won't really matter too much if not, any speed increase is better than what I am using now.

BB Plus should give you decent speeds for a normal download - it's certainly not throttled like the P2P on Plus, and most people who have it seem to be happy with it.

60kbps download on a 2MB connection

Ive been a PN customer for 2 1/2 years and during the time Ive been with them Ive had excellent uptime - my router stays connected for 1,000's of hours and my speeds have been top notch.

I have a problem with speeds at the moment, but that is down to BT and my exchange and nothing to do with Plusnet and this problem would be exactly the same no matter which ISP I was with.

>>>> does the bandwidth contention affect downloads from web sites?

No it doesnt, nor does it affect http downloads such as software updates

>> how fast should I be able to get stuff?

If you are on a 2Mb connection.... the speeds I was getting were
from an adsl guide speed test - 1991 Kbps (248.9 KB/sec)
Downloading from a server 258.1 KB/sec.
sorry if your reader doesnt pick up that last link but its simply a screen capture showing the speed of a http download coming through at a fairly steady 258.1 KB/sec over a period of time

>> are speed touch ADSL modems and voyager 105 modems one in the same? or is the voyager different?

They are different makes and models... although both are USB modems.
Personally I dont like USB, but then again they are cheap and work fine for most people,.. but they they can and do occasionally cause some problems.
An ethernet modem/router is considered better if you can afford.

As regards to a router... I had written a long paragraph about some recommendations, but have deleted it after just tested some the web interfaces with a reader and they dont perform so well... so try avoid BT Voyager 2100, 240, 205... Sorry run out of time to test the Netgear DG834G
Any of you other guys out there care to test how well your router interfaces work with a reader?

60kbps download on a 2MB connection

thanks for the info,
if you want to download a screen reader to test,
you can get one from here

http://www.freedomscientific.com/

I use this one myself and so does my friend, it's relatively easy to install if any of you wish to try the router web interfaces with it.

thanks for the info guys! just like to say, this forum is great, loads of helpful knowledgable people out there,

if there is anything you need help with and I can help, just ask.
