56K Modem Restricted Dial-up Connections Speeds

I recently purchased an ADDON 56K V.92 PCI Internal Modem Card to replace a US Robotics 56K Voice/Fax External Modem which after several years use developed a fault. My Robotics modem connected almost constantly to Plusnet at 45333 bps but the new internal modem's normal highest connection speed to date is 33600 bps and it is frequently below this (lowest 21333). There was one exception on 29th December at 17:03 when it reached 45,333 bps

After checking and rechecking all the modem settings under my Windows 98SE operating system I am unable to improve on the 33600 bps speed. However, two speed tests with Plusnet showed that the card is capable of a much higher connection rates and that is confirmed by the one-off 29th December, occasion.

A look at my modem log shows that my dialup connection is receiving responses "Connect at V.34" so does this mean that the speed at which I can connect with my new card is being deliberately restricted? If so why? A listing of the modem log for the last 24 hours is shown below for reference.

you don't happen to have ADSL on the same line do you?

56K Modem Restricted Dial-up Connections Speeds

No, it isn't that. I have an exclusive BT line. But in any case that would not explain why the two modems attain different connection speeds on the same line. My old Robotics modem still works but has an intermitent fault which makes it unreliable hence the replacement. However, I have reinstalled the old modem to test the line and it still obtains 45333 bps so the problem seems to be specific to the new card.

56K Modem Restricted Dial-up Connections Speeds

ive found its usually down to drivers

the intel drivers are renound for doing just that often the ones that come with the modem are fine then updated via windows update and offer slower connection speeds but to be honest i doubt you will actually get slower speeds ( if thats possible on dial up) but have a look at see what driver version you are on and wether its a new or old and try a different one or join the broadband world if avialable to you my refferal of course... 56K Modem Restricted Dial-up Connections Speeds

odinsrealm,

I took your advice and downloaded the latest drivers from Intel but unfortunately they have made no difference to the connection speed.

I think I will return the card to the retailer and ask them to demonstrate its "56k" capabilities or give me my money back. At least that way I may be able to eliminate any capping of connection speeds by Plusnet. After all, what better way is there for Plusnet to drive subscribers to broadband, But that's probably unnecessarily cynical! And anyway, broadband speeds seem to be an equal source of frustration according to other threads.

Thanks for suggestion.
