512Kbps ADSL connection with 262.96 average speed!!!!

Please could anyone advise me if the following speed is acceptable. I have a 512Kbs connection and have been with Plusnet for nearly 2 years. In those two years the speed has been fine averaging around 50-60Kb per sec downloads. However since the middle of June I have noticed a considerable drop in speed performance, roughly equating to around 25-30 Kb per sec. Please see the following speed test results conducted via the member centre:

Date Speed Achieved (kbps)
07/07/2005 19:02 255.7
07/07/2005 19:02 292.1

05/07/2005 12:32 354.2
05/07/2005 12:17 172

This averages at 262.96 Kbps which personally I think is unacceptable. On all previous occasions when I have conducted speed tests they have ALWAYS been above 500 Kbps!!!
I use a Netgear DG834G ADSL router and it has always been ok. I have plugged it into the main BT socket at home on it's own with no other phones attached. I have swapped the microfilter. I have installed my old ADSL modem, I have also tried in on my laptop to make sure it wasn't my pc but still the speed is very slow.
Anyway I was about to log a fault this evening with Plusnet/BT and was filling in the fault wizard when I came to a page which stated the following speeds were acceptable on a contended service!!!

For a line speed of 512kbps, a minimum of 100kbps is acceptable.
For a line speed of 1Mb, a minimum of 200kbps is acceptable.
For a line speed of 2Mb, a minimum of 400kbps is acceptable.

So therefore is 262 Kbps average acceptableHuh I think not even on a contended line!!!! Please could someone tell me if they think I should indeed log a fault. Many thanks for your help and advice in advance.

If those results are using the BT Speedtester then unfortunatly not a lot can be done as BT consider those speeds good enough...

If its from the PN speedtester I'd go check the BT speedtester results and see what they give - if they're significantly faster than PN's I'd raise a ticket.

Have you tried testing using the BT Speedtester as documented at http://usertools.plus.net/tutorials/id/27 - this will show if the problem is the BT network or within PlusNet's Network, and is (as far as I know) a requirement of raising a fault anyway.

Sorry forgot to say logged onto BT's speed domain and ran a test. It came back as being 129 Kbps!!! See the screen print below:

Thanks.

About the only thing to try on your side is to remove the user face plate from the master socket and plug directly into the socket behind the face plate which will bypass any extensions etc.

If that fails you can raise a ticket but doubt if much will happen as BT will consider your line within their specification.

I wouldn't worry too much tonight, mine is running at around the same speed, and my connection generally claims to be 1Mbs or thereabouts.
Seems to happen every few months, but is generally OK by the morning.

How does it look this morning?
Mine is back to normal - I would put it down to extra web traffic last night.

Thanks for feedback

Guys thanks for your feedback. I'm at work at the moment but will try my connection tonight. I know it's a contended service but it does seem rather poor needlss to say! Can I pay more to move to a 20:1 contended service if I wish?

Thanks.

The good news is yes, but the bad news is that you would have to move to a business package.
Just this week the conversion of residential customers on 20:1 contention has started. There is an option for them to *stay* at 20:1, but there is no upgrade route *to* 20:1 for residential customers.
So I guess the bad will outweigh the good for you personally on this occasion Cry

Still slow!

James - Thanks for your help! Tried my connection tonight and still pretty slow. I can't believe that it's a contention issue as a friend just down the road, on the same exchange as me is fine! He has a 2Mbit connection and can download around 10Mb in a minute! So how come mine is so slow? It's very odd that the speed dropped down so soon mid June. If it were a contention issue I would have expected a gradual decline. Anyway I'm no further on and I'm getting really narked as I have always had around 500kbps! Would you guys log a fault?
