Re: Site Errors (Slow pages, slow posting, connection reset, uploads failing)

OK, so how do you suggest we get the Forum issues fixed ?, when Plusnet support has gone silent, and the people who understood the problems have new jobs elsewhere.  We don't know if anyone is now aware of the issues, or whether there is work in progress to implement a fix.
Lets face it, Plusnet is a networking company, this is a networking issue, it should have been fixed within days, but no we have been left to struggle with the consequences of inaction for getting on for a year.
Is it really a surprise that regular forum members are getting frustrated with these constant problems ?

Perhaps they are (still) waiting to hear back from their load balancing supplier ??
What would / could happen if the load balancer was taken out of the equation, (for testing purposes) ?Huh

Re: Site Errors (Slow pages, slow posting, connection reset, uploads failing)

Are we really supposed to believe that a company who specializes in selling load-balancing equipment,  has sold Plusnet some equipment that apparently doesn't work properly as a load balancer,  and that no other networking company that have bought the same type of equipment have discovered the same issue,  and that after many months after highlighting the problem, the supplier hasn't come up with a solution ?
The longer this tale goes on, the less credible it becomes !
Were these load-balancers bought on eBay ?

Re: Site Errors (Slow pages, slow posting, connection reset, uploads failing)

Why would you need a load balancer for a single forum?
Surely even a single PC could cope with a few transactions a second.

Half tempted to set up a forum run by the community for the community, but that's what they want so they can retire this site entirely.

That is a great idea & would be gladly welcomed Smiley

No, an independent forum run by the community as a Plusnet forum substitute would never work  Embarrassed
Most of us using this Plusnet forum are here to help or be helped with technical or accounting issues with the Plusnet services, or related software or hardware issues.
This can only be successful when there is meaningful interaction with Plusnet staff, because there is a limit to how much help customers can give each other without having access to Plusnet's internal systems to progress issues (usually with BT).
I understand that the idea for an independent forum for Plusnet customers was as a reaction to the Plusnet forum being near unusable at times.
However, if Plusnet don't have the resources to keep their own forum working, or have enough staff to answer questions directly concerning their own business,  then you can be sure that they won't devote any resources to be supporting in any shape or form an alternative forum.
What is very sad, is that this Plusnet forum has always had many enthusiastic and technically capable members who would be happy to volunteer their skills to work with the Plusnet developers to bring new technologies to market, or help debug and refine existing products - using open source tools, etc.
But as time goes on, Plusnet seems less willing to maintain the relationship with those knowledgeable enthusiasts who just want their internet experience and related technologies to be the best that can be achieved, and to then communicate, help and share that information so that others can also benefit from their work.
Back in the day, the "Force9" brand was sold as "Internet for enthusiasts" with lots of exciting additional features, but now Plusnet is becoming cheap broadband for the masses with all the worthwhile product differentiating features long since removed, and is transitioning from an interactive and responsive company to a faceless service provider that has lost touch with it's customers expectations.
I don't suppose the forum staff replacements for the three Chris's, will have any idea of who here are the tech geeks and their associated technical history, which will be an opportunity lost !

Re: Site Errors (Slow pages, slow posting, connection reset, uploads failing)

I can only guess that Force9 has lost (or they've been reassigned) it's internal set of geeks who are happy to create new systems, manage them and look after them.
Force9 were what A&A are now. For geeks, by geeks. The change to a corporation and the paradigm shift that followed has been nothing but detrimental to their business.
There are a lot of questions that aren't being answered, a lack of transparency which would allow the knowledgeable members of the community to contribute their experience to the problem with the forums, and even if we had the answers, the 'small family' feeling has gone.
There's a problem with the load balancers.
For what? Do you mean front facing proxies for the http server? A php-fpm cluster? The mysql databases? The nfs servers which host all/any of the previous?
I get, and understand, the feeling that the person who set up the community is no longer involved with it and is not able to work with it any more (and probably wouldn't recognise the infrastructure it's now on).
PLEASE!! Let us help you. I know I've been cynical in this thread that the opinion from management is to "let it die so we don't have to worry about it any more" but I think it is justified. CCGI  was outsourced, why not community too? Give it a year and webmail will be outsourced to Google or Microsoft.

Good god, I sincerely hope NOT. Despite the issues with webmail as an email "client" for want of a better expression, it has distinct advantages in many respects compared to Gmail or Hotmail. Gmail's spam filtering is rubbish for a kick-off, whereas Plusnet's seems quite good despite a very occasional false positive. And I don't particularly want to be bombarded with ads based on any words in my emails.
Whilst I also use Gmail, Hotmail and Ymail out of necessity, I'm not particularly happy with it.

Re: Site Errors (Slow pages, slow posting, connection reset, uploads failing)

On trying to make a post on Monday at circa 0630/0635 I received the attached. Not had that one before and I wasn't too happy as I could have lost a whole message. Luckily I was able to get it back from the cache. This is becoming really tedious.

Re: Site Errors (Slow pages, slow posting, connection reset, uploads failing)

Been out for a couple of days so not really been on top of this thread.
We made some changes on the 1st of August.  Looks like it's not helped at all.
