Re: Use of text speak - discussion of acronyms split off

So why not use the swear filter to replace acronyms? For example [abbr=View My Broadband Usage]VMBU[/abbr] gives [abbr=View My Broadband Usage]VMBU[/abbr] where mouseover shows you the meaning. Doing that would considerably enhance the forums for the less technically aware.

Re: Use of text speak

As you will appreciate I am not that technically aware and I didn't know that could be done.
It is an interesting idea though although I am not sure how effective the swear filter would be if the content was more than doubled.
I will flag it up in the moderators area for comment by those who know what they are talking about

Re: Use of text speak

Out of interest I am on Win 7 and using Firefox 3.6.13  and can see the word with a dotted red underline, but nothing happens on mouse over, Any clue why
The URL link in Jelv sig does show up on the status line

Re: Use of text speak

SMF has a few interesting BBCode tricks; for what it's worth, a full guide to them can be accessed here, although note that some of them don't work on the Community (e.g. [glow][/glow]).
There's another consideration regarding the abbreviation tag: in Safari at least, there is no indication given whatsoever by SMF that a word has mouseover text available, so to some users it wouldn't be at all obvious.

There is a way round this I think
replace VMBU with [abbr=View My Broadband Usage]VMBU[/abbr]
[abbr=View My Broadband Usage][color=blue]VMBU[/color][/abbr]

The one in Oldjim's post works for me but not the one Jelv posted.

That is odd because other than adding the colour bit there is no difference in the code

It's not a perfect solution, as people might on rare occasions want to use blue text in a post (like there've been a few posts over the years in red), but it is a potential workaround. Also, for what it's worth, there's a [blue][/blue] tag that could be used instead of [colour=blue][color].
