Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

When I've finished reading all I want to on the forums, I mark them all as read. The next time I visit , the threads with new content show as bold. But I cannot find a way to go to the first unread reply. All other forums I visit have this option. All I can do is click on the heading & try to remember the last comment I read previously.

There's an option to display all unread posts, but this simply shows all unread posts in all sections by newest first, so still no option to go directly to the thread I want, to read all the new posts for that particular thread.

Unless you have changed the default, or maybe I have, clicking the thread title in the 'Unread posts' list takes you to the  first post made after you marked everything read previously.

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

I just use the 'Unread posts' link at the foot of the page.

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

The problem with using the "unread posts/topics" link, is that I'm only interested in certain sub forums. I don't want to read all unread messages across the entire forum. It would mean scrolling through all the unwanted new replies & picking out the ones in the sub forums that I was interested in. I can't see a way of filtering out those replies.

Under each sub forum heading, there's a link to "View unread posts (x new)". For example, right now there are (3 new) in the "Broadband" section. If I click on that link, it will show me the subject heading & author. Clicking on the subject heading takes me to the very first post, not the unread post.

I regularly visit about 6 other forums, and all of them allow you to go to the first unread post from within the sub forum, either by clicking on the thread title, shown in bold, or by clicking a "go to first unread post" icon. On this forum, if I visit the "Broadband" sub forum, it does show the thread titles in bold to indicate new unread posts, but clicking on the thread title simply takes me to the very first post in the thread.

Unread POSTS lists each new post separately.

Unread TOPICS lists those threads having updates - one of many.

@RadioFox I see what you mean, but don't quite get your issue. If you select the 'unread posts' tab, that shows all new posts, selecting the one you wish to read - I usually start at the end - then only previously unread posts in that topic are displayed.

Once you  have read all the topics you wish to, just click the 'mark all posts read' tab, and you will clear the unread posts.

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

@Townman  Yep. But it still doesn't help if I only want to view unread messages in the "Broadband" & "My account/billing" sub forums, for example.

It would make more sense to be able to view unread posts from within the sub forum itself. It knows from within the sub forum that there are unread posts, as the thread headings are shown in bold, but there's no way to access them from there.

@RadioFox

Have you tried subscribing to the threads you're interested in and enabling in your forum account settings to receive notifications of new replies?

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

@jab1  The issue is that if I click on "unread posts" right now, there are pages & pages of posts that are of no interest to me, as they are mostly in the "email" sub forum. I have to scroll down through loads of posts to see if there are any new posts in the sub forums that I am interested in, such as "Broadband".

Every other forum I visit will allow you to click on the sub section, view which threads have new replies, then click on "go to new posts" icon for that thread, or simply click on the thread title in bold to automatically take you to the first unread post. Simple & intuitive

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

@RadioFox As a slight modification to @RobPN 's suggestion then, why not subscribe to the boards you are interested in - you will then get notification when new posts are made therein?

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

What is the problem with from here https://community.plus.net/t5/Forum/ct-p/Forum just looking at the boards which interest you having new posts?

TOPICS having new posts are listed at the top.  Clicking the good topic title displays the first unread post.

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

@RobPN  @jab1  Yep. Thanks for the suggestion about subscribing. I'll give it a try & see how it goes. If my inbox gets flooded with notifications, I might reconsider 😆

I'm sure it wouldn't take much to add a "go to new post" icon beside each thread, as other forums do. I'm not knocking this forum, but it just one of those quirks that irritate me. 😬

@RadioFox You don't have to have email notifications - I don't - but if you are subscribed, there will be a notification on your avatar.

Re: Is there a way to find new posts in a thread?

@Townman  I don't quite follow. What do you mean by "TOPICS having new posts are listed at the top. Clicking the good topic title displays the first unread post."?

Your link takes me to the main forum page. I can scroll down to see which boards have had new replies since my last visit. For example, right now "Everything else" board is showing 18 new posts. There's a link under the board title to "View unread posts (18 new). If I click on that link it shows me all 18 replies. Clicking on the latest reply to the "Re: Service showing as outside UK" thread (47 minutes ago) takes me to the very first post in the thread, not to the reply I clicked on. I know that I can opt to "Show full text", but it's not the same as reading it in the actual thread.
