Is the forum censorship too OTT?

I have just been censored for a word that I thought was OK as it means "chore" and is in context.

Can anyone advise me how to avoid getting censored, so I don't look like a potty-mouthed person?

Re: Is the forum censorship too OTT?

Not sure if the censorship thing is automatic or what but whilst discussing fracking some time ago the word got censored but later removed from the banned list so I guess some things might get banned in error.

Oddly enough I mentioned the word farthing  in a post yesterday and wondered if it might get censored based on the first 4 letters.

No doubt one of the mods will explain how it works

Re: Is the forum censorship too OTT?

It's the same with anything in life.
Some words have two meanings, one can be innocent one not.

A few years back there was a pub near where I lived called "(Won't say the word) on the Hill".

My dad told me the innocent meaning, that it meant a group of trees. Lets just say it is also a slang term for a part of the female anatomy, and I'd better leave it there before I get told off. Tongue

@Leapy @gleneagles

There are a large number of words in the automatic filter.

If a Moderator manually removes a word there will be a mod note advising of the action.

It can be a difficult balance between minimising word censorship and keeping the forum family-friendly. We also have to bear in mind that what is posted here can reflect on the Plusnet brand.

Re: Is the forum censorship too OTT?

But, why censor the word for a chore or the old slang word for a cigarette?

The world is changing @Leapy and people take offence for the slightest thing. Some people even take offence if they think you have taken offence for them being offended! They also take offence when it is pointed out to them that they take offence when none was intended.

It's a forum level dictionary which the staff can add to/delete as required.

Re: Is the forum censorship too OTT?

It's difficult for the mods and I thank you for it.

I can think of a three letter word, which now people would find offensive - I won't say what it is, used to mean "Happy".

A friend of mine went to the US and said the term "Rubber", which in the UK is pretty innocent but not there as it means something else. I think he should have said "Eraser". Again I won't go into the detail.
