Forum Rules re Quotes doesn't quite work

Saw this https://community.plus.net/t5/Fibre-Broadband/Hardwiring-in-another-room/m-p/1458431#M62395 and my first reaction was why had the quote been removed as it was the first post on a new page then I realised that the number of posts per page is a user set variable

Linear Format: Posts per page when viewing a topic

So perhaps this rule needs looking at

  • Quotes are a useful way of showing which post/partial post you are replying to.
  • You should not quote a full post unless; (i)It’s not the post immediately prior to your reply or (ii)Your post is the first on a new page

Re: Forum Rules re Quotes doesn't quite work

Your point (ii) will make the change difficult though @Oldjim as by definition it may be different for each user?

Re: Forum Rules re Quotes doesn't quite work

I wonder how many members have actually changed that setting?

Re: Forum Rules re Quotes doesn't quite work

the part in bold is in the existing rule which as you say is practically unusable

Not sure how this can be circumnavigated.

I would hate to see the removal of this rule so perhaps the 'new page' part should be removed... after all, it isn't too difficult to click on the previous page icon when and if necessary?

Well me for one.  Mine got set at 50 soon after launch.

Pragmatic and practical.  Should make the Mods life easier Wink

Re: Forum Rules re Quotes doesn't quite work

except when a poster complains about a quote being removed as it wasn't against the rule and in the case of the post I referred to in the opening post my first thought was "why has it been removed"

Re: Forum Rules re Quotes doesn't quite work

When quoting posts you should not quote the preceding post in full if both posts are on the same page.

Dick

You are missing the point

As the number of posts per page is a user set value then a poster may post with a quote in accordance with the rule but then a mod removes the quote because with his setting it is on the same page

I'm on the same page as @Oldjim  Cheesy

User A:   Default posts per page.

User B:    35 posts per page

User C: (Me)  50 posts per page.

Which setting do you base your moderation on?

Surely it must be based on the setting of the user making the post as it would be unfair to penalise them for something they are not aware of.

Moderator's note by Mike (Mav): Full quote of preceding post removed as per Forum rules.

Edit: Quote re-inserted as it is the first post on a new page as shown in the attachment to the following post and therefore in accordance with forum rules.

Note to moderators: Do NOT remove the quote from the previous post as it is the first post on a new page as shown by the attached screen shot.

Ah!  But the moderator is unaware of the Users setting, so has to base the decision on their setting  - and each mod may well have different 'posts per page'.  Catch 22 Grin

E.g. Your post is #13 on my page.
