Suggestion: Could the holding page that is put in place have a link to http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1390822390.htm

Not a bad idea, but not currently possible at the moment. The current holding page does have links to community and other places where the service status is linked from though?

Could a SMF announcement be put in place for the duration?

Potentially, but to be honest I'm struggling to see the need. We do rollouts like this every 3 weeks or so and the time we're doing it should mean not many people are affected anyway.

Yes and every time we end up replying to posts with links to the service status announcement - hence Jim's post. I was hoping that something could be done to better inform users when the holding page is in place as it's obvious the majority of users pay no attention to the service status announcements beforehand and then when its down they can't access http://status.plus.net
