Re: Peak time latency spikes

@Kelly -

the end point you were on last night was dropping traffic because it was hitting a limit set on it.  It looks like this was directly causing your slow speeds.  (Some of the other 20CN customer had loads of spare capacity 😕 )
We've adjusted our forecast to give us more space to account for the difficulty in keeping the 20CN customers balanced appropriately.
Let me know how performance is tonight.

You said the forecast had been adjusted, but had the limit of the physical end point been raised last night ? - as the recorded latencies were if anything worse !
What are you planning to do next to solve this ?

Likewise, it was perfect until around 6:30..
on Gateway ptn-ag01, switched to my backup connection as it's so slow.
Egremont exchange..

Is this the first time you've seen slow downs?  When did they start?
What provider is your backup line?
Did you run a BTspeedtester test when it slowed?
How slow did your PN connection get?
Are both the lines 21CN?

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Hi guys,
We are still looking at what's going on here.  The issues being experienced over the last couple of days do not seem to be the issue we were having which started this thread. They just don't look the same at all in our internal graphing, or on the TBB graphs.   HOWEVER.  I would like to try something to attempt to prove that.
Tonight, if you start seeing the problems again, can you please get a wireshark capture showing the issue.  I.e. if you are seeing youtube buffering problems, get a capture showing the start of the video and while it buffers.  It if is a laggy game, get a capture from the point of starting the game through to just after some of the lag. (Please don't bother with FIFA13 though as we think there something else odd going on there!).  If it is white paging, or slow web browsing, capture a few minutes of that.
Then upload them to a filesite/ftp site and PM me a link to it and post on here that you've caught something, describing what you've seen.
I'm expecting to see that all of these activities are identified correctly, but you never know!
If you don't know how to wireshark, we've got a couple of tutorials here:
http://community.plus.net/library/faults/using-wireshark-for-data-capture/
http://community.plus.net/library/windows/how-to-use-wireshark-windows-video/
http://community.plus.net/library/tools/how-to-use-wireshark-osx-video/
I'm really sorry for the poor performance and the hassle I'm causing by getting you to help us diagnose what's going on.   Embarrassed

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Did Plusnet drop my session at 17:22 ?
My gateway has an uptime of nearly a week, the SNR margin = 14dB, yet my session dropped and I was bumped onto 'pcl-ag05'.
I've not seen an unexplained drop like this before !  Huh

Re: Peak time latency spikes

We had a gateway drop early this morning which meant we needed to move some sessions around to rebalance the IPSC  platform.  Likely your connection was one of those.
Just as a general FYI, I've pulled all your details together and I'm talking with some bods at BT to check if there is any exchange side contention causing the slow downs.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

If you're friendly with your neighbours/people on the same exchange (non-LLU ISPs and same product!), you could always try the same tests (pathping/speedtest.net/BT Speed Test/iPlayer Test) simultaneously and compare results.
It would be useful if TBB also had a page to share ping monitors of users on the same exchanges etc. (for users that opted-in).

That made me smile  Smiley
Where I am, we go around to the neighbours to see who's turn it is to have electricity today !
I know all my neighbours but couldn't tell you which of them has an internet connection, and if they did nobody would be allowed to go near it without permission of the local shaman (or worse) !
Shocked

Well where I am, my neighbour has 330/30 FTTP and is one of the least deserving people in the country for such blistering speeds! His 10 year old laptop seems to struggle with the speeds (funny that!) and I have to pop round to see how it's performing. BT were happy to give him it though for signing up to an 18 month contract at £25 a month (includes fibre line rental too!!).

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Is nobody having latency issues tonight ?
At this time for the past few nights, people had been complaining for an hour.
My TBB graph isn't showing much deterioration, and currently my http://www.pingtest.net/ results are showing normal response times, although the jitter has gone from 2ms to 16ms over the past hour.
The only difference from my end since yesterday is that Plusnet bumped me onto a different gateway - 'pcl-ag05'.
As usual I am still running at full line speed -

Re: Peak time latency spikes

I am getting "jitter" on bbc.co.uk:
Quote
Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 4ms, Maximum = 28ms, Average = 10ms
Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 4ms, Maximum = 37ms, Average = 13ms

Considering 3-5ms is the norm for me, 37ms isn't great. But you need to have lightening reactions to notice a browsing difference (seems all normal to me).

This is a speedtest from the bt wholesale tester

Re: Peak time latency spikes

I still have no internet usage issues to report, and have not seen a single web page load fail since before my gateway hop at 17:22.
My TBB graph is starting to pickup now, and pingtest is getting worse - but nowhere near to the extent of previous days (so far !).

Re: Peak time latency spikes

jamesanstee:  What ever is going wrong really seems to hit you much much harder than anyone else reporting issues.  This is why I'm beginning to suspect some contention in the wholesale network, either that or you've got a line fault (but I got Chris Pettitt to check your line and it looked fine).
Hopefully will hear more from BT tomorrow on it.
