^^^ Unless you wanted an overclockable chip, people pay more for a guaranteed stable overclock.

ah! the mist is clearing.i see you are taking the risk of overclocking the chip and if it goes pear shaped you loose the chip and have to absorb the cost.

Beauty of it is, these AMD 64's are peanuts compared to their P4 counterparts. After reading this thread I thought "let's see what it can do", my 3200 is now running smoothly at 2.5ghz, no doubt it could go higher but I don't need the speed right now!

do you suffer from a hotter chip if you overclock them and if so will it have any adverce effect on it?

Overclocking usually increases CPU temps and the more you overclock the hotter it gets. Whether it will affect it depends on how high it goes. >60C then the life of the processor may be affected and hotter still it may stop functioning or damage it.

You can often get better cooling methods anyway using better heatsink/fans and use better thermal paste to reduce temps. Also using additional case fans can help dissapate heat from the box. So there are ways to compensate for the CPU getting hotter.

It's to be noted the standard temperature for AMD64 is in the mid 30's so you've got a very large margin before you hit 60 degrees; they are pretty much the most overclockable chip to date without special cooling thanks to AMD moving to the built on heat disperser.
