security with .htaccess and php

I can secure an html file using .htaccess, but if this
file is to be a php program, which resides on the cgi server, then this will not work as someone can just run the cgi file if they know what it is.
Is there a way around this? Can I use .htaccess on the cgi server?

Just answered my own question: I tested using .htaccess and it worked fine.
