ppp dialup through linux (gentoo)

Hi
I am trying to get a dialup to force 9 from a gentoo box. I've tried by hand and by using pppconfig to get the scripts setup properly but the furthest I've got is for the number to be dialed and what sounds like handshaking but then line gets dropped.

I did read a doc on how to set it up by hand, but it talks about using the system log to see what output pppd is giving and using that to work out what to say in return, but my pppd isn't logging any info. I'm using metalog and I can get it to create a blank file, if none exists, when I start pppd but it doesn't actually log anything.

Anyone any ideas?

Ta, I'll give that a go.

I half wish you hadn't replied coz I already had too much to read and now I've seen all those HOW-TOs I've added a lot more stuff to my list!

Yes! There's some good material in those HOW-TOs - worth looking at even if you're not a Linux user.

you dont say which modem you are using but i used this script for the alcatel speedtouch on redhat and it worked fine. I found this script after tring for over a month to do it by hand. http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/
