mySQL with telnet

Hi techies,

Q1) The web-access to mySQL via the protal is all well and good, but how do you access mySQL from unix?

If I type 'mySQL' commands in telnet on crofters I get: "ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'
(111)"

Wot?? Do I need to pass it usernames and passwords - I've tried with:

mysqladmin -umansun -p create ContactDB

and get the same error plus "Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!" and

ls /tmp/mysql.sock

tells me this file is indeed missing.

Q2) How do I copy a table generated over the web to my force9 database? How do I import one from a text file?

Any replies please to sam@mansun.f9.co.uk as well as this group.

Cheers,

Sam.
