.htaccess again, now on crofters!

My mind got wondering today and I came up with a plan to redirect subdomains on the crofters server to subfolders using .htaccess.

E.G. http://test.example.com/index.php would come from http://cgi.example.com/test/index.php

NB: F9 have already configured the "cgi" DNS records for my domain.

I've found plenty of information on the 'net about how to do this and I have mild familiarity with .htaccess but I can't get this to work Sad After uploading the .htaccess file to the root of my cgi space and visiting the test.example.com domain I merely get a permission denied page.

Is it just that "RewriteRule" directive is not allowed on this server (I use it perfectly on homepages)? Or am I being a muppet?

Thanks guys.

What is in the .htaccess file?

Without knowing that it's impossible to even attempt to help you.

Have just re-read what you are trying to do and you won't be able to do a redirect from test.example.com to cgi.example.com because they are on different servers. The RewriteRule is for pointing to a different directory on the same server.

I think you want to configure your DNS entry so that test.whaterver points to cgi.whatever

There is an FAQ on setting up domain records here http://portal.f9.net.uk/central/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1847
