I'm looking to set up an ecommerce site, using shopping carts and paypal.

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions as to the best way to go with this?

Cheers

Paypal has it's own shopping cart software which is easy to configure. You can also get a free cart from here: http://www.mals-e.com/, that will work with PP and Nochex.

Looks good, thankyou.

Whilst posting this, I had a look at the OScommerce site too... I just need to work out some technicalities for that one.

This thread over on the Plus.Net forums may be of interest to you;

You can login as `guest` with password `guest`

Some highlights;

osCommerce does in fact work ok with ccgi. I recommend you search out the UK installation as it will save a LOT of work (assuming you are in the UK).

os Commerce installs fairly easily. Remember to change the perms of the php files.

UK Based Install can found at:

That is the nature of osCommerce that there are hundreds of thrid party "contributions".

Its htaccess I am afraid.

But with a little help from here;

You will soon be working.

Also see here about generating the password.

I am planning a tutorial on installing oscommerce at some time, but I am a little busy setting up and testing a site for a friend.

Thank you everyone.

I have used htaccess previously to keep some of the private internal content on the http://www.coleshilltownband.org.uk website private!

In discussions with the friend who I'm writing the website for, she said the OScommerce looked a little "commerce heavy" for what she wanted. Basically she is after a showcase for her jewellery, with a store back end, rather than a web store per se.

I need to look further into this side of things, as another friend is using Paypal to control the carts and payments etc.

That said, it has been interesting dabbling, and any exposure to PHP and MySWL is all good IMHO.

cheers

I should have reread the thread completely; other users are reporting insecurities, when using htaccess on the CCGI servers.
Three clicks and your in, password or not !!!!

Making Jewellery must be in vogue at the moment, as the osCommerce site I am working on is for a friend making hand made Jewellery, and on the osCommerce forums half (OK over exaggeration) of the sites for critique are Jewellery stores.

Shameless plug: www.treehicks.co.uk

Have they considered an ebay shop? Or you could use a photo gallery application, for a show case.

PS Post back a link to her site.
