change chmod with explorer?

I've always used internet explorer and my network places to ftp files up to webspace and CGI. My php scripts don't work on the new server, and I gather I need to change the chmod. I don't even know what that is!

When I right click a file in the webspace, I can change the properties, and have ticked all the permissions boxes, but it still doesn't work.

Is it possible, or do I have to start using an ftp client? What is chmod anyway?

Thank you,

Rik

chmod is a *nix command used to change the permissions of a file or directory, it's short for chhange mode.

If you tick all the boxes, this allows too liberal permissions. As this can be insecure the server will not execute the script.

You need to give you scripts read and execute permissions to the owner and the group, but not everyone else.
