Wanted: Spam

I am currently researching several algorithms such as the Bayesian one to learn and adapt to identifying spam within email systems.

In order to achieve this we need a large quantity of spam email, preferably the freshest and latest ones that are floating about.

We have already setup several pop3 inboxes in various locations around the net to capture as much spam as possible and on average we receive about 500 a day, but what i was wondering was would people be willing to participate in this research as well? We literally needs tens of thousands of emails to increase the accuracy of our research.

What we intend is to setup a mailbox on a new domain that people can then forward all their spam email to. An automated solution would be to use plus.net automatic forwarding and direct it towards our spam collection site instead of the blackhole account that they setup.

Before we spend our hard earned cash on this system, would people be willing todo this if we guaranteed that their personal details remained anonymous and would never under any circumstance be sold or used. Since we are merely interested in the 'body' of the email we would welcome anonymously sent emails if you wish to protect your personal information.

Just trying to get a scope of how many people would aid in this project and i know its a little unusual actually asking for spam. Tongue

Any ideas appreciated.

Wanted: Spam

Probably not, I get on average 70-100 pieces of Spam a day so I'm not likely to want to forward that many emails. The other issue I have is that spam sent to me goes through Spam Assassin and then becomes an attachment to an email so it would need to cope with that as well Smiley

I think that zebbedi is asking you to set up a PlusNet mailboxe (i.e. you may have a mailbox spam@csogilvie.plus.com) to forward to the spam collection address instead. Smiley

And FWIW, I'd be prepared to do this, as I have a junk mailbox anyway!

Ah, I was going to forward him my junk mail from all the accounts I have (about 12, not all with plus.net)

Thanks for the responses,

We would of course accept spam from any mailbox, but just as kuglin suggested since plus.net has an automated forwarding system for identified spam this would be extremely easy to setup.

Alot of domain providers also have systems such as CPanel with implementations of SpamAssasin and other such utilities to allow you todo this.

Similarly most mail clients these days include rules which can be used to forward email identified as junk. Obiviously we wouldnt expect you to wade through all the spam you receive forwarding it manually. :p

As for attachments, we would probably be piping the email received straight from qmail into a database, so the scripts can be adjusted to handle attachments and decode them.
