Unbuffered Output

I have a php script that takes some time to execute and I would like it if I could see the output from the script as it is generated. The CGI server, however, appears to buffer the output before sending it to the client. Perl experiments have shown that CGI non-parsed header output (http://ken.coar.org/cgi/draft-coar-cgi-v11-03-clean.html#7.1) does not seem to be supported, and PHP seems to take the parsed header route anyway.
Does anyone know if, and how, this can be overcome? If not, can anyone suggest a workaround?
