Router -> Bridge

I'm using AR11 router, but I'm hoping this will be more or less a hardware independant query.

Has anyone set their router up as a bridge?

I want my router to be basically a media converter :

phonesocket---rj11----router---rj45----firewall

I want to assign my public IP address to my firewall and have that do my routing. I'm quite happy to use serial link to config the router if I lose IP connectivty to it..
I used to have a dialup modem attached to this firewall/server, which gave enabled the server(which is also a firewall) to have the public IP.
Currently the firewall has a private address.

By media converter I mean:
Imagine having a hub with 8xRJ45 connections, and a coax connector. Pretend the coax is RJ45 connector, and pretend it only has one RJ45 connector. That's what I want it to be.
