Questio for Denzil

Who was the comedian who was thrown off the BBC in the 1950s ( ok no comments about old boxes!) for telling this joke?

I was crossing a river on a very narrow bridge. Halfway across I met this beautiful blonde coming the other way. I did not know whether to toss myself off or block her passage!

Pretty riske for the 1950s, no wonder he was banned.

Ok, who won the battle at Hastings? If you know that, does that mean you are
900 odd years old? I know you feel like it at the moment. Sad

If anyone else wants to join in then it is OK by me.

Erm, (trying desperately to think of any comedians who were around then), how about Bob Hope?

Sad to say Denzil, homeaga1n has spoilt it for you, again.

A little seriously for a moment I find it incredible that Max Miller actually thought he could get away with it. I know that now almost anything goes, but in those days the BBC was so straight laced. They actually cut the program as soon as he said it, and it was years before they let him broadcast again. Pity realy because he was a funny man.

Max Miller was always pretty risque.

But what about the BBC kids show RAINBOW.

Follow the link below to watch an episode of the classic British children's television show "Rainbow". This episode was allegedly aired in 1981 and almost every line is drenched in inuendo.

Not familiar with Max Miller - a vital part of my education has obviously been missed. Still, I can understand how that would have been too much for 50's BBC. I saw the Rainbow thing recently - although I find hard to believe that a prerecorded show like that would have got past every producer etc who saw it and actually been aired. Parents watch TV with their children, there would have been uproar, complaints, news stories, surely?

Bring back the Goodies, that's what I say

I like the Rainbow link, but the soundtrack has clearly been put on afterwards.
The story about its being actually shown is like the one about Captain Pugwash having Roger the cabin boy and Seaman Staines.

But I suppose you're all too young to remember Captain Pugwash and the Black Pig. Tongue
