We have just bought the ADSL with the Router option, but it hasnt arrived yet. Will we need firewall software on all the connected PCs or does the router deal with that ?

I believe the standard router issued by Free-Online is the Solwise SAR110, which according to the ADSLGuide Review of this router does include a firewall. (You may also like to familiarise yourself with the router from Free-Online's own SAR110 Support pages.

Whether each PC needs to have its own firewall software is a matter of disagreement amongst router users. Some are quite content with the protection provided by the router, and see no need for anything more. Others agree that the router provides good basic protection, but then go on to argue, what happens if -- perhaps by some human failure -- something does get to one of your PCs inside your network? The other PCs then have no protection of their own and could fall easy prey if something does get in. It's a bit like a country: you have guards protecting the border, but does that mean you can leave your front door open? What if the problem's already inside?

It's a question for each person to decide, based on considerations of the perceived risk, the damage, cost and inconvenience that could befall if it transpired, versus the cost and inconvenience of implementing the extra security.

For the short term, at least, the router will provide the basic protection you need, so you shouldn't be put off getting up and running as sson as everything's ready. For the longer term, it's up to you to decide what you want to do.

Products like ZoneAlarm (the free version) from Zone Labs are quite popular for individual PCs.

All this, of course, is quite distinct from Ant-Virus protection and spam filtering, for which other software can be employed.

I have a wireless/router/modem which includes a NATS firewall with various settings to play with. However set at 'Medium' protection it gets full marks from the 'Symantec.co.uk' online 'Security Check'. This check is available to anyone so it is some comfort to know that this firewall system does seem effective. Certainly worth your piece (!) of mind. Give it a try.
