Need help for a report!

I am in the middle of doing a report for college on the pros and cons of the internet and was just needing some opinions of other people to include in it, so the first place I thought of was asking you wonderful people! I am just looking for a line or tow on your opinion on wether internet is a good idea or not and the pros and cons of it.

Thanks!

Right, quick few off the top of my head

1. The wealth of information available on the internet makes it a valuable resource, however the downside is it is hard for (some) people to judge which sources are authorative and which are junk.

2. The amount of spam is reducing the benifits of email.

3. The ability to contact people in other countries which before the internet would have been a slow process via snail mail etc

4. A serious problem is the amount of illegal material available on line and that the internet removes national borders and controls (that can be a good thing or a bad... I'll let you argue which).

5. The ease of carrying out fraud has increased with few safe guards being available to joe public beyond common sense.

6. Provides house bound people with social interaction which otherwise would be impossible.

7. Makes the world seem smaller - events are now reported in real time with no time lag between events occuring on the far side of the globe and being able to read about from your sofa in blighty.

Think that should give you few points to ponder Wink

A slightly different approach is to say that like it or not, the internet is inevitable.
It's here to stay, so you might as well get on with it.
Show how this is the case, with examples of where attempts to throttle it (other than Plusnet  ) and limit free speech have failed because of its design, and how they will continue to fail.
Then go on about the good points as above, and then the bad points, and how these can be defended against. If they can. Which in cases like porn they can't really. But everything has a price, and putting up with those bad things is the price for the good things.

That way your essay will be fun for you to do, and not like everybody else's.

Yes Geoff's idea sounds great, as he said if you look at it from that angle, you'll have something unique to everyone else.

It'd make a change for the marker though

What subject's this for? If it's computing, I don't remember ever having to do anything as interesting as this [unless its part of the "Higher Still" stuff, in which case I didn't do it Smiley]

i have my higher english, however with all HNC/HND and I think Degree courses ther SQA require you to do a course called Communications which is basically English, however they try to relate it to your course as much as possible, so no romeo & juliet!

The course I am doing is Multimedia Computing & Web Development

Here's another viewpoint. Illegal filesharing etc. being good for common people.

How much have DVD & CD prices fallen since broadband made piracy rife and the big media companies had to stop ripping everyone off and cut prices in order to get people to actually buy their products?

How much more have we found out about the workings of governments and industries since whistleblowers could leak sleazy litle secrets etc from an internet cafe without getting found out.

How much harder is it for governments to suppress dissidents and keep people from finding out what's really going on when they can't just threaten to close down newspapers/radio stations that don't comply with their censorship laws.

I agree Northbritish... Considering Google's *spits twice* attempt to become user friendly in the Chinese communist state.
