How do I secure a web page - create log in account?

I have a website I need to create a user name and password log in facility to be able to access it.

Does anybody know how to create/code that type of entry screen and make it secure enough?

I would be most grateful of any help.

Many thanks.

Normally log ins are done with the htaccess file. If like me you are no good at that sort of thing, you can use this programme here http://poeticpollution.net/scripts/DeadBolt/. I use it to secure the webstats created by my script.

In addition to didit's post, note that if you dont use SSL encryption then the passwords will be sent as plain text (i.e. not secure).

There is SSL functionality on the homepages server if you are on f9, you have to access it via https://homepages.force9.net/yourusername/ (note httpS).

There is no SSL functionality on the CGI server Sad

There are many ways to secure a website. Obviously, you will need to have something like an SSL link to make it more secure. Sending passwords over an unsecure link really is not a good idea.

I did some code not too long ago which took the username and password field, and passed it to a back end database on an odbc connection to check the values entered. If the entry was ok, then a variable was set, which sent them to a page. If not, then it logged them out and gave a denied page.
