been a while since I bought a camera so not sure of present market but my advice is to buy it when you get there as opposed to here - you will get a lot more for your money. I bought mine when in Florida. (Got a Fuji Finepix S5000)

I agree with you Rob.

I have a Fuji FinePix F10, a bit more than your budget but it's great value, great battery life and I bought a half GB card with mine (an extra £50, but worth it); there's a good video setting on it also.

just to add:

there are a few key things to look for when buying a digital camera. Most people know not to pay any attention to the digital zoom aspect as it's pointless. You can take the photo and then zoom in on the PC and get better results because you aren't subject to camera shake then.

For me, the most important feature on a camera is the time taken between when you press the button to take the picture and when it actually does take the pic. There are a lot of models that have big delays. I've never seen it advertised anywhere what this time scale is likely to be, probably because it varies on how much autofocus has to be done. They do often advertise the time between picture taken and how long to write to memory before you can take another picture.

Fuji / Olympus use xD memory which is pretty fast. SD can also be fast but that's down to how much you spend on the card as there are different speed memory cards available. The older CF models I've seen were always sluggish and horrid, not sure how they are these days.

I can vouch for the picture quality of this camera; I've seen some of the results and they were very impressive! Wink

Got a Casio Exilim ex-z120 just before Christmas 7.2 mega pixels, super fast shutter speed, 3 x optical zoom, takes SD cards 2 x AA bats and is real compact a bargain for £149

The ex-z120 is basically the AA battery version of the Casio exilim ex-z750 another very good camera but slight over your budget and the battery is built in (you need to charge it on a docking station)

New York Must See, apart from the usual attractions
When in Time square take a look in ' toys R us ' regardless of your age, its amazing & has a full size ferris wheel & life size animatronic T rex amongst other things.
Grand Central station, Huge building with plush red leather armchairs in the waiting area & shoeshine boys etc.

Roosevelt island cablecar tramway, the one king kong snatches in the old film

have fun

Bit late to the party here, but just in case you're still looking and/or consdiering buying while you're there, I'd suggest taking a look at B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ That store is highly recommended by the regulars on tripadvisor.com. Calumet also have a store in NY - http://www.calumetphoto.com/

I'd also recommend checking out http://dpreview.com and www.steves-digicams.com/ for camera reviews.

We're off to NY ourselves in the not-too-distant future & I reckong the 4Gb of photo storage we've got between the two of us will take a hammering Wink
