Error in Internet Explorer - can't download files/attachment

Tried everything on the MS support web-site.. even tried upgrading to IE6..everytime we try to download we get a stupid error msg to the effect that the it unknown or non-contactable (sites are fine as evidenced by our other PCs that can download the files!)..something is wrong somewhere in IE or the registry..

Any ideas anyone?

You dont say what system ie windows 98 2000 xp. I have had this problem and I fixed it by logging in as a new user and then deleted the old profile. You may have to copy some of the other things from your old profile.

A new user get new reg settings for a lot of software etc so this could be the answer.
You dont have any download manager running?

good idea....tried it..

but it didn't work!
Using W98 SE..
tried to download IE6 SP1 (as a test or a fix!) but got the same old thing:
"Internet explorer cannot download ie6setup.exe from site download.microsoft.com

Internet explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later"

Check
Tools>Internet Options>Security>Internet>Custom Level>Downloads and see if this is set to disable.

you could try winguides as they have a support forum for iE may get some more answers there

go to control panel/ addremove programs. select internet explorer.

click remove, you should then get menu, with add component, repair, or uninstall.

try repair, if still no joy reinstal IE.

you might as well also run system file checker.
click start/run
type"sfc" then click run - this will check your core system files

good luck

Just a thought have you changed the security default level in IE (tools>internet options>security>custom level). Just check you have not got the radio button set to 'disable file downloads.
